I'm giving it two stars because I finished reading it and the plot was at least interesting. This is the third book I've read in this series, and I think the writing gets worse as time passes. Or maybe I'm just more critical after reading books written by more skilled authors. The characters are mostly shallow and stereotypes of themselves. Most are unlikable and unbelievable, and do incredibly maddening and stupid things. The dialog is often lame and un-natural. That said, if you're looking for crime fiction and don't want to have to expend a lot of energy getting involved in complex characters, you may enjoy this book. It's not bad, it's just not that well written in comparison to many other mystery writers.
I enjoyed the first two novels in this series more than this one. The villains were less convincing. The main suspect, Holly, was too similar to Pilar, who was better developed in a previous book. I like the fact the protagonist is a normal person, but why do the villains and her coworkers have to be extraordinarily beautiful and (explicitly) oversexed? It makes the whole story unrealistic, in my opinion, and seems to be pandering to a "typical" (male) crime reader. The reason I like to read women crime authors is there tends to be a bit less of formula and a bit more authentic characters. Kathy Bennet is a good writer and obviously know police works. I will read more of her and hope to meet more real people, cops and perps both!
If you like thrillers - this is a MUST READ. This is a very realistic LAPD based novel. It seems the author formulated the main character on some of her knowledge and experiences along with some very thorough research. Each chapter left me hanging on, wondering if the good guys would prevail. This was very difficult to put down. So I didn't. The shocking ending will just blow you away. There is very little bad language, and a fast paced fascinating plot that made Kathy Bennett one of my favorite new authors. Get to work Kathy - we want and need more like this one. Maybe with a few motorcycle cops for characters, because they really are characters.
A Deadly Denial is a page turner for sure. I read this book in three nights. I did not want to stop reading as I had to find out 'whodunnit.' I loved the characters from Ms. Bennett's previous books and she's out done herself with plotting this time. I could not wait to get to the end of the book while enjoying every minute of reading. I won't go into details as I hate reviews that give away things. My advice, start reading--you will be hooked--and don't stop until you reach the last word. Amazing story with great characters and many twists and turns. Enjoy.
WOW! I couldn't put this book down! All of her books have been great, but she knocked this one out of the ballpark. This book had a non-stop onslaught of twists and turns and startling events. I particularly appreciate that she kept all the characters on the reader's radar screen; not once did I have to turn back the pages to be reminded of who a particular character was. Then, just when I thought the book was about over, POW - another startling event! As a retired LAPD cop, I can attest to the accuracy of the police procedures and activities described. While all characters were fiction, I could identify a trait here and there from some of our former colleagues! Kathy Bennett has spent a great deal of time further developing her skills as an author, and it really shows. Her skills, creativity, and LAPD experience has served to elevate her to the absolute top of my list of favorite authors.
This is Kathy Bennett's best and most exciting book yet! I loved all the twists and turns throughout the book and she even wrung me out with another twist on the last page of the book. Can't wait for more from her.
Once again, Ms.Bennett dazzles with characters so real you start to suspect your next door neighbor might be the next suspect! I loved every page of this book and couldn't put it down. I had to know who the culprit was, and like any good who-done-it, there are complications, twists and turns only someone who has been in law enforcement could come up with.
