Ethan and his friend Jared were coming of age. They would soon pass their required studies and be sent away. Where? No one knew, but rumors swirled against what the government told them. The men were sent to the east coast or to the military. But they never came back.
Doomed to a society of oppression, Nyla and her girlfriend Claire along with Ethan and Jared decide to make a break for it. Under the cloak of darkness and into an impending storm, they left on a chaotic journey through the Big Ben Region of Texas.
Boarder guards awaited them but freedom stood within reach. Will they make it before they're captured? Will the two young couples find happiness in Mexico where all that was forbidden in America, including love, would be a possibility?
Once again Kim McMahill delivers a chilling portrayal in Desperate Dreams. As I read the book, I could see how easily headlines and technology in place today could easily turn into the unsettling future of tomorrow. Another real page turner. Well done!
McMahill tells the story of four teens plotting to rebel against the odd strictures in their world, where a person is imprisoned for too much emotion and other inappropriate activities. Female dominance is normal, as males are sent to work camps. It’s a society where people long to escape—to Mexico, where the border patrol is brutal.
Nyla and Ruby manage a friendship with two farm workers, Ethan and Jason, in between mandatory school and career training. Life is dreary, but there is one coffee house in the small community where they can meet without causing too much suspicion. With the help of Nyla’s incarcerated mother, they come up with an escape plan.
Follow along as these friends work together to seize an opportunity for freedom from oppression. Each character, along with several secondary characters, has a voice in the book. Those readers who like stories like Future Shock and The Giver, will like this story.
Nyla convinces her friends that they must head for Mexico before their male friends, Ethan and Jared go away to never return. That can’t happen because Nyla believes she may be in love with her best friend, and she cannot imagine life without him. As the deadline for their escape quickly approaches the friends will learn what they are made of, physically and emotionally. The book follows these four friends on a journey of escape and freedom that will keep your heart pounding.
Author Kim McMahill writes yet another adventure romance that has the reader begging for more at the end of each chapter. Towards the end of the book, I could not put it down until I found out what happened to these four characters McMahill crafted so carefully as to make me feel like I knew them personally. As the popularity of dystopian novels seems to climb, I would highly recommend adding Deadly Exodus (Desperate Dreams) to your list of must-read dystopian fiction. You won’t be disappointed.
This book was very mind provoking, especially with all the headlines today about the government agencies accessing public on-line information and how everyone is feeling the need to install security cameras. Kim exposes us to what our future could come to be, while taking us on a dangerous and suspenseful journey of four friends who want nothing more than to be allowed to enjoy life together. My husband enjoyed this book, too.
The only problem with this author is she needs to write more books a little faster. I've now read all her books and need the next one...hurry up.
Nyla knows there is freedom across the border in Mexico. Her mother tried to smuggle Nyla out of the US, but was caught and imprisoned.
Nyla cannot bear to think of losing Ethan and her friends. They ban together to make a desperate escape from the oppressive regime before it is too late, but peril lays ahead of them despite their well-made plans. This action-packed adventure kept me turning the pages.
