In Deadly Games, we discover Amaranthe and her group have once again stumbled upon a mystery plaguing their city. Several athletes are in town for the Imperial Games and when they start disappearing, Amaranthe and the Emperor's Edge embark upon another mission in the hopes to clear their names and redeem themselves in the eyes of the emperor.
I have been a fan of these books from the very beginning and Deadly Games has definitely lived up to my standards. The characters that Buroker has created are just as motley as ever, and if possible, they have become even more dear to me. In this book, we get a closer look at Basilard's perspective: his fears, his beliefs, his sense of duty and what he feels he owes his people. His main inner struggle circulates around Sicarius and one of the assassin's past deeds. Although I expected Amaranthe to play a significant role in smoothing over the relationship between the two men, I was pleased to discover otherwise. In a way she does influence their decisions, but Sicarius and Basilard are able to come to an understanding on their own.
One other thing I appreciated about this book was how far Sicarius has come since Emperor's Edge. His humanity is really starting to poke through that icy shell of his and we are starting to see the person beneath the assassin. In this book he makes mistakes and even lets his guard down a bit when he has somewhat of a bonding moment with Basilard. I hope to see more of this in future books and I hope the other characters (not just Amaranthe) come to see it too.
All in all, a wonderful book indeed. Buroker offers up a very satisfying conclusion, but one that only makes the reader eager for the next installment. Hopefully, as in the case of the other Emperor's Edge books, we won't have to wait too long to see what happens next.
I have been reading all my life and since I first picked up Encrypted by Lindsay I have been hooked. The Emperors Edge books are just so incredibly fun to read and I read them over and over again. I nabbed Deadly Games as soon as it was released and devoured it like an addict. I have already re-read my favorite parts and I am constantly going over her previous books whenever I am bored. Usually I only re-read a book after a long enough time that I have started to forget what happened. Not so with Buroker, I re-read the interactions between Amaranthe and her crew ALL the time.
I love that Sicarius is slowly working his way through his own struggles and the end of the book was so incredible that I just want to hug him for finally, finally doing something outside of being an amazing assassin. I loved that he made mistakes in this one, but didn't lash out at Amaranthe for it like in the first book and I love how Amaranthe is so great at not giving up on him. I thought it was great too how there was some inner struggle within their crew and that Amaranthe wasn't the one who fixed it.
All things aside I love Amaranthe the most because she truly is a regular girl. No special powers, no hidden past that causes her to be some messiah for the future. She's just an incredibly devoted, smart, sassy and ridiculously funny woman who bands a group of misfits together and dedicates her life to making her world a better place. She is selfless and brave and everything you could possibly want in a hero.
I think my only questions is why is Akstyr still with the group? If he doesn't get paid well and doesn't really seem to like anyone, even Amaranthe, then why is he still there? I am really interested to read Lindsay's take on his side of the story so I hope that's the next one she does.
I cannot wait for the next installment. Wonderfully written and it was wonderfully received. Keep it up Lindsay!

Steam punk, magical (sorry, science) and alien elements. Believable and
diverse protagonists from different backgrounds and with different skills. Fast paced, imaginative story line in each book, build around a mixed group of outlaws (deadly assassin, female ex-enforcer, thief with magical abilities, researcher, gentle mute ring fighter and a full-of-himself dandy with questionable dress taste) trying to clear their names through honorable actions, which not alway go according to plan, but no worries, Amaranthe will talk her way out of it...
As with all of Lindsay’s books, her superb descriptive writing makes the created world, characters and stories very vivid and enjoyable.
Each of her books gives insights into the well created characters, their motives for actions and their developing relationships.
You will even come to understand and feel sorry for the trained from birth, deadly, monosyllable assassin Sicarius.
Books from different spin-off series link into the same world you will come to love, adding more (historical, ethnical and character) background and visuality overall.
In short, you want to read them all in order and you will want more!

“Oh, no," Maldynado said. "When I get my statue, I don't want it to be an image of me going up a squid's butt.”
Review
Deadly Games is the third installment in the Emperor’s Edge series, and is also Basilard’s book. Now he’s a free man, and not dodging wild Makarovi he’s ‘vacationing’ with the rest of the team - although they all have vastly different interpretations of the term (ahem, Maldynado!)
He’s also thinking about his homeland, his daughter, and how the actions he took to survive condemns him in his people’s eyes before a plea for counsel further crushes how he perceives himself...and certain others.
Meanwhile, Stumps is gearing up for the Imperial Games - like the Olympics, only with more steam and backstabbing. The stakes are high, the rewards are vast, and the athletes are going missing. Of course, if there’s trouble afoot, Amaranthe can be found looking for clues in its midst, and a friendly wager gives her the inside man that she needs.
The Amaranthe/Sicarius situation is ‘unknown’ as Sicarius is so fond of saying, but Maldynado’s attempts to set up Amaranthe with Deret Mancrest result in glares that could freeze the balls off a polar bear...and I’m not 100% sure that it’s simply because he wants to turn her in, either. (Eeep!)
While Amaranthe and Sicarius commit to research, Basilard finds himself in alliance with Akstyr, and it seems that the team are working towards separate goals until the missing persons epidemic affects them directly, resulting in a most unexpected camaraderie.
With her team divided, Amaranthe rallies all of the resources at her disposal to mount a rescue mission, but with Practitioners, a Kraken, and the ever-present, always dastardly Forge group working against them, it certainly won’t be easy.

The Emperor's Edge are back again only this time there is a rift between some of the men.
I enjoyed the dual narrative and learning more about Basilard, it was fascinating reading from the point of view of someone who is unable to speak.
Though Sicarius is absent throughout a chunk of this story, we certainly see a more humane side of him, as well as more of that fine body (many thanks Lindsay!)
I spent much of the story chewing nervously on my fingernails (a trait I proudly share with Amaranthe) as there are many tense moments and life and death situations. Although there were still many laugh out loud moments again mostly due to Maldynado who I have a soft spot for. He really is an awesome character.
I'm now diving straight into the next book of the series, Conspiracy and I'm really hoping Amaranthe can seduce Sicarius, those two seriously need to get together!

PS. I rarely give any book 5 stars, I really think this book and the whole series are worth it. Totally engrossing reads.

I don't know what it is; she is not the best author I've read and she is not the best writer either, at least, not yet, although I have a feeling that she is going to be. What she can do though is tell a very, very good story and people her stories with characters who actually interest the reader. All her people have something about them that makes me want to find out more about them; get to know them better.
Oh yes, and she has a good sense of humour too, and it shows.
This is one author whose writing career I am going to follow with interest.
