With her debut novel, DEADLY DEADLY, M.J. Vigna has written a fresh and vivid tale of such a trail drive. A lusty and compelling page turner, it brings us again the glamour and power of the cowboy archetype.
Rather than moving westward, this cattle drive starts from the shores of the Pacific West and heads for Texas. There are other twists. The cattle are purebred Herefords and are guided and protected by a lethal, but loyal Texas Longhorn named Deadly and his longtime friend, the Trail Boss. Along for the drive is the herd's owner, a gorgeous woman. The motley drovers, including a virile half-breed, are few in number, ranging in age from very young to very old, from able to disabled. The conflicts they encounter are action-filled, the obstacles fierce and relentless. Other women help along the way. One, a strong, kind-hearted whore, joins the group in a push over a mountain in a blizzard. The author knows the territory. Her descriptions of the country as the herd crosses through desert and mountain landscapes are beautiful. Her depiction of animals is masterful and supports the theory that it is often better to trust in animal instinct than human behavior. I commend DEADLY DEADLY both to fans of the Western genre and to those who might be discovering it for the first time.
Loved it , a MUST read .
