Mirabel Campbell is a brilliant but bored scientist and amateur astronomer who wants to trade in her microscope and telescope for a career with a little more excitement. One of my sons came up with the premise for Deadly Star. "What if what looks like an asteroid was really a satellite?" he said one night. "Suppose it was a weapon?" My imagination took over and gobs of research followed. One of the more interesting things I found was that in the 1990s, the U.S. government funded something called "Operation Dawgstar" and provided grants to college students to develop nanosatellites. I also discovered that nanosatellites were actually launched from the space station in 2001 and that they possibly could go undetected by world powers for some time. The surprise meteor that hit Russia in February 2013 proved that premise to me. The meteor was reported to be as big a five-story building when it entered the atmosphere but wasn't detected. Scary stuff.

Botanist Dr. Mirabel Campbell falls into a deadly scheme of murder, political intrigue and potential biochemical warfare when she spots an unnamed star in the night sky. Unaware that she has innocently stumbled into an elaborate plot which involves the FBI, CIA, foreign diplomats and murderous assassins, Mirabel must figure out what and who is behind the deaths of people near and dear to her. The book opens with an attention grabbing plane crash in the desert and escalates with plot twists and danger at every turn. cj petterson has written a real page turner which is hard to put down. Her characters are well developed. Her heroine is intelligent and strong but also has a dry sense of humor and can laugh at her own fear. The males characters, especially the good guys, all come across as very believable. If you like a good tale of intrigue and danger with a a touch of spice, this is the book for you.

Great Story Telling

I just finished reading “Deadly Star.” It’s a great story and very well written.
I loved the way each chapter ended with a big “omigosh” moment that made it hard to put it down, just because I needed to find out what happens next. I suppose that’s the essence of suspense. Her style reminded me of Dan Brown,since he similarly keeps those chapter-to-chapter hooks going.
She obviously did a lot of research in several diverse fields to keep the details so wonderfully specific and accurate relative to weaponry, aeronautics, biology, astronomy, Japanese, and various secret government agencies and programs. Very impressive.
Great job!
I can’t wait to see her next one.

Hard to Put Down Till the End

From front to back this action-packed mystery kept me guessing about what could possibly happen next to make Mirabel's predicament any more complex. Her practical scientific mind stayed in constant contradiction with her impractical attraction to her ex-husband which added a genuine human aspect. CJ Petterson's broad knowledge of astronomy, airplanes, law enforcement, espionage and peoples' psychological foibles brings this book to life. I could see, smell, and almost touch each character as they interacted with emotions ranging from greed to love. As one who is usually successful in guessing the ending in mysteries, I failed with this one.

Scientist Dr. Mirabel Campbell finds her life in danger as well as several friends when her hobby of star gazing has her stumbling across something no one was supposed to see. A top-secret nanosatellite. When her ex-husband Sully shows up at the most opportune time to save her life she also has to deal with long-buried emotions. And it turns out Sully isn't who she thought he was. But Mirabel is extremely intelligent and it doesn't take long for her to see that 1+1=her! And her discovery along with her scientific specialty makes her the target of a mysterious psychopath who sends an assassin to silence her. Sully & Mirabel obviously have unfinished business but secrets drove them apart once, will they again? When I first read the premise of this book I almost didn't read it but the review ratings changed my mind and I'm so glad they did. Kept me on the edge of my seat. This action packed drama filled book has a high rating for a reason. IT WAS GREAT!

Petterson's sharp style is perfect for international intrigue. She is spot-on with her research and fills what could be boring scientific information with a hefty dose of intrigue and romance that kept me reading. Mirabel's cryptic sense of humor is perfect for her bantering with the other characters and made me laugh aloud at times. Congratulations to Petterson for creating a smart, funny, and sexy protagonist that I would like to see again. With Mirabel and Sully's backgrounds, there is potential for many adventures and thrills for years to come. Petterson's excellent descriptive detail kept me on the edge of my seat in every one of the car scenes. The romantic tension is intensified from the first page to the last, yet never exaggerated.

Fun and Well Written

Deadly Star, a romance/thriller where the craft of writing shines, including a terrifically good sense of place--Mendocito, California (fictional town) and other places west. The dialogue throughout is also spot-on. Protagonist Mirabel loves star gazing and discovers a strange object in the night sky. She can't ignore what she has observed and thus begins her quest to discover what she is seeing. Ultimately, she learns that the object could pose a major threat to the United States. A constant (but not unpleasant) complication in Mirabel's life is Sully, a complex and dangerous--yet protective--avenger. Sully always has Mirabel's back, even though she doesn't know this. A fun read and a great escape into action-packed entertainment. Set the beach chair under a broad umbrella or curl up on the couch and enjoy! If you are a romance reader who enjoys a complex story with a smart, sassy protagonist, I think you will like what CJ Peterson has done in Deadly Star.
