“A terrific setup, razor-sharp repartee, and enough plot reversal to make your head swim like an afternoon daiquiri, Bum Deal is vintage Paul Levine: entertaining and exceedingly smart.” —Andrew Gross, #1 New York Times bestselling author
“Jake Lassiter is up against his greatest challenge—an incurable, brain-wasting disease that threatens to rob him of his brilliant, legal mind when he needs it the most. It’s an astonishing, bittersweet, and daring gamble, but those are the qualities that have always set Levine and Lassiter apart from the pack.” —Lee Goldberg, #1 New York Times bestselling author
“Jake Lassiter for the prosecution? What will Paul Levine think of next? How about a brilliant doctor who just happens to be a murderous psychopath? How about Solomon & Lord for the defense? It’s all there as Levine connects the funny bone to the heart in the pulse-pounding Bum Deal.” —John Schulian, PEN/ESPN Lifetime Achievement Award winner

Short review: read it.
Paul Levine is a must buy, must read author. This stand-alone is easy to follow and difficult to put down. No editing errors, graphic violence or drag-you-down drama. Surprise ending.
Intriguing storyline with several twists throughout. You are drawn into the various scenes and want to wish Jake the best in his battle with CTE, chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking, informative and snarky dialogue.
“I’m not moldering. My paint’s not peeling off. I’m good for years!”
Henry II in The Lion in Winter by James Goldman
"The young man knows the rules, but the old man knows the exceptions.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.
Melissa said, “How are you feeling, Jake?”
"Why does everyone keep asking that? I could do a triathlon.”
"I don’t believe you.”
"Sure, I could. Drinks, dinner, sex.”
“Getting stoned will not stop the strands of tau protein from hardening in your brain,” she said. “It’s the cannabidiol, the CBD, that’s neuroprotective.”
"Hey, regular weed has that, too. Why can’t I get a buzz at the same time I get therapy?”
I will re-read this story and always look forward to, pre-order when possible, new works by this author.
This Bum Rap story thrusts our hero Jake to cross the courtroom floor and become the prosecutor against his best friends and mentees, Victoria Lord and Steve Solomon. In this final thriller, Jake walks that fine line between friendship and professional duty, and he seems to have performed that task brilliantly. The story takes Paul Levine’s literary twists and turns in a fun romp to the last page that will make the reader feel that he muffed on a slow pitch curve ball.
Farewell, my friend, but perhaps in a year or two when fans’ pressure force a next story, we’ll see more of Jake’s wonderful exploits. This is definitely a MUST READ for Jake Lassiter as well as Solomon and Lord fans.
