About the Author

A native Minnesotan born to a Swede and a Wisconsinite, Peter Madsen lives in Brooklyn. A longtime contributor to Thrasher magazine, the bicycle messenger works in Manhattan, where he has conducted over 250 on-the-spot interviews with New Yorkers, largely panhandlers, for his ongoing "Word on the Street New York" project. He spent his entire advance for this book on a gold chain. He loves your cat.

definitely good insight into the drug world in NYC. crossing cultures from educated up and comer, to the derelict street peddler, and ending up with a cops pov on the drug trade. I appreciate the attention to detail Madsen gives to the things in these characters lives that most of us would not think to ask. I was really hoping for an interview with a large scale king pin or Mafioso, but then again they a they didn't get large scale by going public. I would definitely recommend to my friends.

Real interviews with real drug dealers from varied backgrounds, in diverse situations, all trapped in the same hustle. It's a rare look into a subculture that is seldom spoken about let alone detailed by individuals who live it daily. Although the bulk of the conversation is pertaining to prohibited activities, the book makes me think of New Yorkers ingenuity and that everyone across the city is finding it harder and harder to make ends meet.

It's a great read, kept my curiosity peaked all the way through, I highly recommend Dealers.

Amazing Intimate Look at the Drug Dealer Culture in New York City

This book was bought and read in the same day. It was an amazing read from start to finish with detailed interviews with some of the people in New York City that are perhaps the hardest to reach and to get to open up about their life and their profession. Peter takes an in depth look at this culture and forms cohesive interviews with these dealers in a way that would be very difficult for many researchers who would seek this kind of rich information. There is a clear knowledge of the author of the content presented, and the writing is well organized. I can't wait to see what future interviews and literature will be published by this author. A definite must read for anyone interested in the dealer culture and the alternative lifestyle of drug use in New York City. From your local musician to the Hedge Fund Manager, these interviews clearly show that drug use is prevalent in all walks of life, regardless of class, income, or lifestyle. Kudos to a well written book!!
