King of Cool” Dean Martin’s music career spanned an incredible five decades. He sang with a multitude of peers including Nat ‘King’ Cole, Line Renaud, Bing Crosby, Sammy Davis Jr and, of course, Frank Sinatra. He recorded songs written by such talent as Peggy Lee, Rodgers & Hart, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Burt Bacharach, Barry & Maurice Gibb and Lee Hazlewood, and worked with the best arrangers, producers and orchestrators in the business, including Nelson Riddle, Dick Stabile and Jimmy Bowen. With innumerable hit singles, Gold Albums and hundreds of hours film and TV footage to his name, Dean Martin’s unprecedented legacy still resounds today and his music can still be heard on radio, streaming and in the background to countless modern movies.
Bernard H Thorpe's Dean Martin - A Discography includes full listings of his singles, studio albums, EPs, compilations and soundtracks, interspersed with contemporary press announcements, sleeve notes and historical marketing & advertising material, most of which have not been seen for many years. There is also a rare interview with Dino himself.
So sit back, pour yourself an apple juice, and let your memories be made of this...

Like all discographers, they have to make choices: they chose to include only US and British issues, which seems fair on the surface. But that means their book completely omits the foundational collections of Martin's Capitol and Reprise recordings--the four big box sets from Germany-based Bear Family, with Mosaic Records, the kings of boxed, supremely well-documented reissues. Perhaps that's because their discographical rival Chintala contributed to the massive Bear Family project, which supplanted the Thorpes' own thwarted reissue project on Charly records. Whatever the reason, the omission severely compromises the completeness and utility of the Thorpe book.
Meanwhile, the album covers and other pictures in this new book are interesting though not always well-reproduced. The indexing makes it impossible to untangle the numerous legitimate and bootleg issues of Martin radio shows and concert appearances.
If you love Dean Martin's' work, this is an interesting book, but it could have been much more--the equivalent of the "Kick in the Head" that kept Dean "grinning."
