Beautifully written. Emotionally heart-wrenching. Just WOW! I was completely moved by this story. It’s strength, unbelievable resilience and unending love. It was an amazing journey. This will be one of your Top Reads of 2020!
Ava is strong. Her life has been anything but easy, however she does not let her absent parents or the pain from her past hold her back. She has a brother to take care of and goals she is determined to reach.
Her life was completely thrown off course, but now she’s back. She’s going to finish out her senior year at the high school that will bring back the pain, but also guarantee her future.
She is a warrior. She puts up with the insults and the mean girls. Nothing is going to stop her from finding the truth and taking her life back. And then the unexpected happens when a shark becomes an unlikely ally. She never thought Knox would become her lifeline.
Along the way she’ll create her own circle. A family of her own making. It won’t be easy. The truth will bring some peace, but moving forward will require the ultimate sacrifice.
I was completely consumed by this story from the first page to the last. It truly was a journey of pain, revenge, letting go and ultimately lasting love. Ava came full circle and it was amazing to be along for the ride.
The sexual tension was palpable. The connection was soul-searing and could withstand time and distance. The culmination was better than you can even imagine! I LOVED KNOX AND AVA!
Truly a favorite read. The author gave us a story you won’t stop thinking about and characters you will let into your heart.
I leave you with this quote,
“Our lines got a little blurry along the way, through broken hearts and time lost, but in the end, we made a full, complete, beautiful circle.”
I hated that ava gives her deadbeat mom all her money when her mom shows up back in her life. "I'll give you everything I have." Why? She didn't know how much Ava had, so Ava could have given her $500 instead of $3000, and kept most of the money Ava had worked so hard for. It was stupid. And Ava isn't supposed to be stupid. It angered me so much that I hated Ava at that moment.
I thought the scene with Ava and Knox in the bathroom was a little over the top. I thought it would have played out better had she just been a silent 'listener' to what he did, maybe be discovered after? Having her do what she did was OTT, as was her almost falling out of the tub and then the two of them falling on the floor. Sometimes less is more.
The timeline: Early in the story, Ava says she 'turned 18 last January', and since it's September of her senior year when she says it, it means she will be turning 19 in a few months, and would be 19 1/2 when she graduates? That's way too old. And then when the main story is sort of over, and jumps ahead 1 year and 9 months, and she's working in a bar, serving alcohol? And, she's apparently worked there for a year, serving alcohol and mixing drinks at 19.
Another weird thing is during the second epilogue ( which I found kind of cheesy TBH), is that Dane and the girl he brought back from Greece are only engaged. If my math is correct, from what the author wrote, Dane and his girl have been together 8-9 YEARS ... and are only engaged?
I give this 3.5 stars (no way would a teacher or whatever at a school tell her students to cheer their 't*ts' off at that night's football game over the intercom), and while I liked the cover, the model looks way too old to be an 18 year old boy ... plus the lack of a facial scar ...
And, my final thought is the title: I really thought, based on that and the blurb, that there were going to be many 'Dear Ava' letters from Ava's 'admirer'. There was only the one, and it was pretty generic, so the title seemed like a stretch. I actually thought the book should have been called 'The Phoenix', which would have been more fitting.
This book is an emotional rollercoaster and an incredibly written story that is very sensitive in the way it portrays sexual assault and mental health issues. I could feel these characters. I could feel their pain and happy.....the mark of an amazing author! While this is an emotional book, the author perfectly balances it out with fun, happy times and even some steamy sexy times. Ava's HEA is hard fought and perfect!!
This story is a heartbreaking and emotional romance that left me breathless. Ava is a brave girl who fights to move on and Knox wants to help her. I loved the way they both help each other heal, their deep connection is palpable through the pages, and their romance is EVERYTHING, so raw, sweet and moving, full of moments soul-crashing, angst and banter in spades, I still feel it in every fiber of my being. I will remember these characters forever.
This is definitely a unique story that you don't want to miss, it made me sigh, swoon and love along with the characters, I didn't want it to ever end. A standing ovation for the author who left me with the worst book hangover ever.
Definitely a MUST READ!

"He won't take his eyes off me. I watch with fascination as Knox bites his lower lip, digging in deep, so hard I expect to see blood bloom there."
Ava has been away from her elite private school for ten months, dealing with a trauma that has left her ostracised from her peers. Not only does she have to deal with the fallout of the scandal, but she has to deal with the Sharks - the ruling rich kids of the school. However, she has her reasons for coming back and she'll be damned if anyone tries to scare her away. What she doesn't expect is a tentative friendship with the King Shark, even though there's always been a weird tension between them.
"Part of me never wants to see her face again, but the other side of me...well, that's the one I have to worry about."
Knox Grayson, King Shark, famous for being the school's star QB, infamous for his under-the-bleacher girls, known for never kissing on the lips. Scarred, broody and surly. He wants Ava but she's forbidden to him for so many reasons. However, the intense yearning he feels towards her consumes him. She's back and single, and no matter how hard he tries, he can't stay away.
"Kissing him is like I've spent a day in the sunshine, and when night comes, the stars will only shine for me."
Gaaaahhh!! I was completely hooked on Ava and Knox's story. Ava is a such a strong heroine with so many reasons to play the broken, helpless card but her spirit endures. SHE endures. Her indomitability is fierce, breathtaking and awe-inspiring. She lost something of herself through her traumatic experience, but she's looking to take it back by strutting back into her own personal hell.
Knox is a seemingly nasty guy but underneath his scarred facade lurks a beautiful, vulnerable soul, looking to protect those he loves. I appreciated that even though he was old enough for sexual intimacies, when it came to the really hard adult issues that life is made of, he acknowledged the fact that he was just a kid and ill-equipped to deal with them.
"You have to take a good long look at me, a [f...] long look and see what I'm made of, what makes me tick, and it's about you."
There's a real dichotomy in this book between the hard-to-deal-with issues and the sheer romance of Ava and Knox. Their connection is incredible, their chemistry exquisite, their passion for one another overwhelming, and their strength took my breath away. I loved the progression in their relationship and I absolutely swooned at their gorgeous, emotional ending.
I have yet to read a less than stellar book by this author. She is totally my jam!
Heartbreaking yet heartwarming. Ava’s story will have you totally captivated. This book reminds you that you just never know what pain or difficulties someone is dealing with and sometimes all we need is to just breathe....The topics covered in this book were so real and painful....the author has written about them with great care and compassion whilst still keeping their severity.
With touches of humour, great friendships, real dialogue and beautifully written chemistry this story will have your tummy fizzing and your heart swelling☺️
My heart started vibrate from the start as author was introducing Eva to us. I was incredibly drawn to Eva, her strength, her wounds, her caring nature and ability to bounce back kicking even if her life was torn upside down once again.
She was this resilient person who had to learn to fight and survive from a very young age. Her relationship with Tyler was heartwarming and showed a mature and nurturing side to her character. Even if Eva hasn't experienced love in her childhood, she was able to care for her little brother like the mother would.
In the beginning, I didn't know what to think about Knox. I was scared that author will give us a common jock but she did quite an opposite.
Knox is this hot like hell and very caring, loving big brother who set the tone to the relationship with Eva. They both had a lot in common: sense of loyalty to their family and very determined mindset who they want to be or what to do with their future. His past is hiding dark underlining issues that Knox and his brother have been dealing with on daily basis. It made him keep people at arms length but also be very protective of his breaking family.
I loved how beautiful and sweet it was to watch these two young people coming together, falling in love and in turn stitching back each other's hearts. Author did great job painting a rich story line tackling dark and very sensitive issues that characters were dealing with and yet preserving this lightweight tone throughout the book and giving us hope. 💝
It starts on a dark note, the fallout from which drives the whole book . So we are gifted with a whodunnit thread alongside a ringside view of Knox and Ava’s will they-won’t they fiery relationship. Ava, what can I say, I loved her strength and determination; I loved the enigma that was Knox, so many layers there; I loved watching their romance unfold. This book had so many feels, I often had to pause and take a moment - some very poignant scenes. Chapter 25. - made me smile and hold my breath at the same time!
My first Ilsa book but certainly not my last.
Buy it, read it, love it and tell your friends
This book had me laughing, crying, angry and a whole host of other emotions that I don’t think I can even name!
This story is unique, interesting, action packed and emotional. It shows what strength and determination can achieve and conquer and how love can help you heal.
A MUST READ 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Apart from another book I read last year, this one is going to be very difficult to write about. But first, be warned, if you have any triggers around sexual assault/rape topics, probably this book is not for you, even though the author is very responsible to treat the matter.
I was thinking how I could summarize this book, on how you feel while reading. And for me was the 7 stages of grief (doesn’t need to be in order): Shock, denial, guilt, bargaining, depression, reconciliation and acceptance. Add to this 7 feelings the romance, love, friendship and specially family. I felt everything. I cried a river, felt anxious, wanted to know the ending but didn’t want to end! I said, this is difficult.
Ava is a brilliant girl, I wish I could be friend of her. She is strong, determined, won’t let be defined by some atrocious act against her and yet she will do everything for the ones she loves. Knox... he is the male version of Ava. He also went through some shocking events during his life and the fallouts are there for everyone to see but only her can! Both so strong and broken, but yet vulnerable and capable of love. I wanted Knox for me, but they are so perfect for each other that I felt bad.
I’ve read chapter 25 and both epilogues more than once and as I write this words I’m crying again because I’m feeling so overwhelmed with emotions. The ending was so deserving that I want to keep closed in a jar forever.
This is a masterpiece that EVERYONE should read once in a lifetime and see how yours actions can impact someone’s life’s.
Dear Ava and Knox, this book is about finding yourselves and other things. And I’m so happy that you found each other in the end. Ohhhh that end!
