Editorial Reviews

Natasha Tomic,Natasha is a Book Junkie: "This book has the power of touching the reader sodeeply by giving us unique and very precious insight into the world of childadoption, from both viewpoints of the birth mother as well as the adoptiveparents. I walked away at the end of this book feeling like my heart had growntenfold, overflowing with so many emotions, and desperately hoping thatfiction, in this case, had found its roots in real life."
Mollie Kay Harper,Tough Critic Book Reviews: "I was blown away by the story's originality. I wasblown away by the romance and passion. I was blown away by the heartache andpain. I was blown away that I whole heartedly invested my emotions into thelives of these two women."
Gitte & Jenny,Totally Booked: "What a truly breath-taking, compelling and beautifullystirring debut from Trudy Stiles. The writing was truly beautiful and the storywhich shows the past as well as the present was so raw and gripping my heartwas so full of cracks by the time I'd finished."

When I initially read the blurb for this book, I was lead to believe it would be an emotional story full of heartbreak and redemption. When I needed a strong and emotional book, I pulled this one off my shelves (can I still say this if I use a Kindle?). I had high hopes for Dear Emily, but I was left disappointed for a few reasons.

First, the writing just didn't work for me at all. This is my first book by Trudy Stiles, so I have no idea if this is her normal writing style or what. If it is, I can't see myself enjoying by her unfortunately. The writing felt juvenile to me. The inner dialogue, the character interactions... all of it felt kind of ridiculous. I found myself rolling my eyes many times and that's certainly not something I expect to do when reading a book dealing with these topics.

The characters just... annoyed me to no end. It might have to do with the writing, but they felt childish as well. They certainly never felt like mature adults that had been through some stuff (if that makes any sense at all). None of them felt realistic. Even worse is there's practically zero back story for any of the characters and that left them feeling one dimensional.

All of that being said, Dear Emily felt like it was on the edge of goodness. There's so much potential here. That is what is most disappointing... seeing a book's potential to be a really good story and watching it fall flat. So, while this wasn't exactly a hit with me, I will likely read the next book, Dear Tabitha. I just won't be reading it any time soon.

Maybe it's my own fault, because I had SUCH high hopes for this book, based on what I've seen on blogs. But man, I was so disappointed by Dear Emily. The premise was a really good, it was just the execution of the story that fell flat for me. The writing style is very choppy and awkward, there are countless punctuation issues (exclamation points...seriously, there was one on every page. Commas. Use them correctly, please), and the dialogue wasn't realistic. In theory, I understand why she kept flipping back to the past, but that's a writing device that should be used to increase tension, but it actually did the opposite for me. It took me out of the story, and dragged down the momentum. There was another two star review that nailed it on the head for me, I know what happened to them, but I didn't feel like I knew them. And obviously, since those reviews were buried on the bottom by 'not helpful' votes, undoubtedly by a street team, I know my review will suffer the same fate. What's even more disappointing to me is that I bought this and Dear Tabitha at the same time, and I won't even attempt to read that one, it was such a struggle for me to get through Dear Emily.

With so many books out there today it's hard to find one that isn't just a cookie cutter version of the next. I personally enjoy books that are more than a "surface" read. I like to walk away from it with having gained a message. I like to "feel" the story and characters.

Trudy Stiles does just that with this book. She conveys with her writing a beautiful story that grips you, touches you and stays with you. I would have never guessed that this was Trudy's debut novel because it's so well written and beautifully done. Bravo to her for such a great job on her first book. I really look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

Words cannot express how amazing this book is. For it being a debut novel, Trudy Stiles hits a grand slam! This book will pull at your emotions and bring tears to your eyes! I know it did for me. It’s a story that everyone should read! We have a tale of two women who life different lives that write letters to the same little girl Emily. One is had to make the decision to put her daughter up for adoption, the other wanting so desperately to have a family that was robbed from her at such an early age. The story goes from past to present for both women. It’s a book with two stories but the author does outstanding job merging them into one.

We start the book off with Carly. She is a young college student who has her whole life in front of her. Until she is brutally attacked and discovers that more was taken from her than just her virginity. She goes into a dark depression and tries to push everyone away. Her friends, who I loved, refuse to let her slip into the dark. She also meets Kyle during this time. He is uber sexy smart teacher’s assistant in one of her classes. I loved seeing their relationship bloom and he helps her with more than just her classes… (wink… wink…) Kyle is the guy we all want to fall in love with.

Then we have Tabitha. It seems like nothing can go right for her. She has been in abusive relationships. She was forced into prostitution and when she got pregnant, she was forced to give her child for adoption and get back to work. When things for from bad to worse, Tabitha is able to escape the hold this man has on her and she starts over. When she finds herself pregnant again, she knows the only thing she can do is also this child up for adoption.

That’s when their stories entwine.
