I loved these characters & this world and I’m not ready to let go of them just yet. I really hope Nate & Harley’s friends will be able to tell their stories!
I voluntarily reviewed this book.
I loved that this book was written from both Harley and Nate’s point of view. That actually made me enjoy the book so much more. And I am sooo hoping that we get more in the future about Callie, Jules, Stefan, Reid etc.
The whole idea of the book is that the children of a gaming company are forced to get married to appease the apparently born in the 1950s owner of another tech company.
Harley and Nate have been friends since they were born. Both have been in love with each other but neither ever admitted it. Wanting distance from her feelings, Harley moved across the country. When a scandal breaks about Nate (There were pics of him having sex with someone. Whoopy-freaking-doo) the investors in their company threatens to pull out. Everyone comments that the girl kinda looks like Harley and so their dads come up with a brilliant plan to pretend it was his soon to be wife. Because I guess having public sex is okay as long as it's your finance?
So, this could have been good but there were several gigantic issues. For one, every one of their friend and fam knows about the fake marriage. The only person who doesn't is the investors. Harley has a boyfriend at the time and actually leaves their date to go home per her father's request then has to break up with him over the phone after she agrees to marry Nate. And her boyfriend just goes with it? Like he never comes forward to announce they were together at the same time as Nate's photos were taken. There were SO MANY PEOPLE who could have called this marriage a fake but of course no one does until the end and the couple has to break up before their whole get back together scene. And Harley's reason for being mad? The girl he slept with was mean to her in HS. TEN YEARS AGO!
Oh, but wait there are more plotholes.
Nate says at the beginning he doesn't even know who took the photos but then at the end says he knew it was the chick he slept with. The whole investor drama at the end. Everyone's flip-floppy comments about the marriage being fake but not really.
On top of all this, the pacing was so off. Nate is always clear in his chapters that he loves her, but Harley goes from avoiding and hating him to loving him in ONE chapter. Then they are all in love and of course, fooling around because we HAVE to have that in a romance book even if it fits like a warped puzzle piece. Her ultimatum was trash and only used to drag out the last 20% of the book. We get at LEAST 3 useless chapters meant only to set up the next character's books.
I literally could go on and on. I have no idea how I even finished this which is sad because I love this trope.
WHEN IT'S DONE RIGHT.
PS can we stop letting out breaths we didn't know we were holding? That saying died somewhere in the mid-2010s.
