This is a great story. Rachel Rosenstein is a young girl who loves everything about Christmas- but her family doesn't celebrate because she is Jewish. She begs her family to get a Christmas tree, writes a letter to Santa, and makes homemade decorations for her living room. Despite her best efforts though, Santa doesn't come which makes her sad. Later at the Chinese restaurant they go to for dinner she learns that she has other friends from school who don't celebrate Christmas and they share the different holidays that they celebrate.

The thing I love most about this book is that they don't water down or lessen any holiday in order to be PC. Instead, they share the diversity of holidays that people can celebrate by highlighting each one. What a great lesson for any kid- to learn that different cultures/religions/people celebrate different holidays and that each has their fun and unique traditions. Great book for a kid who has been in a similar situation as Rachel- or for a kid who celebrates Christmas but wonders why others don't.

I love this book - it's beautifully written and illustrated, and I wish I'd had it to read when I was a little girl! Perfect Hanukkah gift - I know my boys (ages 7 and 10) will be able to totally relate to Rachel Rosenstein's dilemma!

My almost-3 year old son "discovered" Christmas this year. He was briefly really obsessed with celebrating Christmas instead of Hanukkah. I had purchased a copy of this book without really thinking I'd need it already. The language is kind of complex for him and he loses the story a little. I would say it's more on a mature 4 or 5-year old level. The last time I simplified the language and he lasted through the whole thing easily. Some aspects I like about the story: the mom has to work on Christmas (at a hospital, just like me!), there isn't a Hanukkah versus Christmas set up (being Jewish also means Shabbat, Passover, etc; the story ends with children from many religious/cultural backgrounds who don't celebrate either holiday), and Rachel still gets to be sad that she doesn't get Christmas. We don't "protect" our son from Christmas: he listens to Christmas songs, tours to see Christmas lights, and helps friends and family decorate the tree. But we also want him to realize that Christmastime is lots of fun but it's not our holiday. This book fits our perspective quite well.

This is pretty cute. The illustrations are good and the story is reasonable as well. I could have done without the seeming moral at the end that Christmas really is the most wonderful thing but you'll have to be happy without it - I'd have preferred something more about freedom of religion and public vs. private spaces.

I thought the sibling/family dynamics were well portrayed.

Last, I thought the restaurant scene veered pretty far into stereotype territory, to the point that I expected a line of dialogue, "Hey, let's make a Math Team"! :)

Thought it would circle back about how she should appreciate her own religion and how she is happy to be Jewish, but it seemed more focused on how to celebrate the various cultures and religions. There was a lot of focus on Christmas and less on how to focus on one's personal culture/religion when surrounded by the temptation of another religion. It's a cute book, just missed the mark for me.

My 6-year-old loved reading this book this holiday season to learn more about the differences between the holidays that our family and her Jewish friends celebrate. I would have given the book 5 stars, but I thought the ending was a little abrupt.

This story is the most intelligent, human, realistic and humorous treatment of the universal emotion of envy that you will read. Using the convention of a children's book, the authors frame the dilemma of being "outside," as the great writer Herman Wouk would say, when all of the cool fun study of Christmas is on the inside. The story is so realistic that we will all see a piece of ourselves in it, and at the same, be able to laugh at ourselves with understanding that we can live without having everything in life.
