This is a great, lighthearted, fun movie! For a contemporary, younger generation, it's probably just too much. But the generation for whom this movie was made, a generation that went thru a war that just killed 60 plus million poeple world wide, it was a simple, fun-loving, fresh, happy, 'the-future-did-look-brighter-and-new-days-were-coming' type of movie. It touches a wonderfully simple sense of love enough times to leave you in a better frame of mind once you have finished the last moments of the film.

This is a review for MY DEAR SECRETARY (1948) written & directed by Charles Martin. The nearly forgotten Lorraine Day co-stars in this fast paced later day screwball comedy as a wanna be pro writer named Stephanie Gaylord taking a secretarial job with best-sellling home officed writer Owen Waterbury played by Kirk Douglas.

Mr. Waterbury's success seems to come from the fact that he is so poorly organized he doesn't know whether he's coming or going and no one else seems to know either.

Finally Stephanie threatens to leave and to get her to stay, the playboy best seller offers to marry her. Wildly unbeleivable story buttressed by fine performances from all in the cast especially Keenan Wynne. Well done comedy with more than a few gaps in logic and believability.

I rate it Three and One Half Stars.

For those of you who may have stumbled on this movie by accident, let me tell you that for the price you won't find a better movie. The comedy is sharp and the dialogue is better than any episode of Frasier. Wynn rules as the Godfather Of All Slackers: "If you have the opportunity to get paid for doing nothing then grab it, you fool!".

I only watched this movie because of Irene Ryan. I had no idea she had such a big career prior to The Beverly Hillbillies. She's so funny. I'm not a big Kirk Douglas fan and this one proves my point. The movie is much dated as for all the sexist remarks. Irene Ryan saves the movie even with her tiny parts. Check her out in The Diary of a Chambermaid. Sadly, not too many of her movies are streamable.

An interesting idea - that someone would go through many secretaries before finally marrying one, with various kooky characters along the way. It has its moments, some quite amusing, though this is definitely a "B" movie.

Rounding up from 3 1/2 stars -- though not a 'classic' in the overall cinematic sense, it's a classic example of the 'screwball' comedies--silly scenes and rapid-fire witty dialog with plenty of romantic undercurrent--of that era. Fit-as-a-fiddle Kirk Douglas, who is usually cast as a Man of Action shows his flair for comedy, as does the beaming Laraine Day. Even so, this movie really belongs to Keenan Wynn (later famous as Disney villain Alonzo Hawk) and Irene Ryan ('Granny' of the Beverly Hillbillies) as they share some truly hilarious scenes together. The story goes a little limp during the last few minutes, as though the writers decided 'hey, let's rap this thing up, already.' Fortunately, the actors are still giving it all they've got so it remains a solidly entertaining film, perfect for a sick day or a rainy weekend.

I love the acting, but the characters make no sense. They flip from anger to depression to lunacy without any clear motivation. It's an entertaining bit of fun if you don't mind the lack of a coherent story.

In MY DEAR SECRETARY, playboy novelist Kirk Douglas hires a college girl from his writing class (Laraine Day) to help transcribe his latest book. They become romantic and get married but don't live happily ever after for very long. The strongest element of this screwball comedy is Keenan Wynn as the best friend who practically lives with Douglas, even though he rents a nearby apartment. Wynn has the funniest lines, the best timing and steals every scene he's in. Rudy Vallee is also quite good here.

Parenthetical number preceding title is a 1 to 10 IMDb viewer poll rating.

(5.8) My Dear Secretary (1948) - Laraine Day/Kirk Douglas/Keenan Wynn/Helen Walker/Rudy Vallee/Alan Mowbray/Irene Ryan/Grady Sutton.
