This is a magnificent book that reaches into the very heart of the absolute horror of the conflict in Syria: the systematic slaughter of children and innocent men and women.
It is an extraordinary narrative of the depravity of war as seen through the wise eyes of a child and the heart-rending prose of her mother. It should be no surprise that this spellbinding writing by two witnesses to the Syrian conflict is under malicious angry attack by those who cannot abide by its powerful truth: the regime of Bashar al-Assad has pursued war crimes and crimes against humanity of historic proportions.
Indeed, the trolls are driven to the foolish tactic of uniform complete one-star dismissal of the book and outlandish slander of its authors, seeing not one iota of the beauty and truth in this magnificent tome. For those who have not blinded themselves with infantile ideological bias, this book is an absolute “must read” for its powerful emotional contribution to the best of antiwar literature.

“A story of love and courage amid brutality and terror, this is the testimony of a child who has endured the unthinkable.” —J.K. Rowling
“I’m very afraid I will die tonight.” —Bana Alabed, Twitter, October 2, 2016
“Stop killing us.” —Bana Alabed, Twitter, October 6, 2016
“I just want to live without fear.” —Bana Alabed, Twitter, October 12, 2016
When seven-year-old Bana Alabed took to Twitter to describe the horrors she and her family were experiencing in war-torn Syria, her heartrending messages touched the world and gave a voice to millions of innocent children.
Bana’s happy childhood was abruptly upended by civil war when she was only three years old. Over the next four years, she knew nothing but bombing, destruction, and fear. Her harrowing ordeal culminated in a brutal siege where she, her parents, and two younger brothers were trapped in Aleppo, with little access to food, water, medicine, or other necessities.
Facing death as bombs relentlessly fell around them—one of which completely destroyed their home—Bana and her family embarked on a perilous escape to Turkey.
In Bana’s own words, and featuring short, affecting chapters by her mother, Fatemah, Dear World is not just a gripping account of a family endangered by war; it offers a uniquely intimate, child’s perspective on one of the biggest humanitarian crises in history. Bana has lost her best friend, her school, her home, and her homeland. But she has not lost her hope—for herself and for other children around the world who are victims and refugees of war and deserve better lives.
Dear World is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit, the unconquerable courage of a child, and the abiding power of hope. It is a story that will leave you changed.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"A modern-day Anne Frank.... just a year after she began tweeting, she has published a book, Dear World, out Tuesday, that tells the story of a young life circumscribed by war—a life where schools are bombed, friends die, parents are taken away for days at a time, food and water are scarce (if available at all), and a trip to the playground is a distant memory."–The New York Post
"Told from a child's perspective, the story is stripped down to its simplest elements, throwing the tragedy of the thing into sharp relief."–Glamour/The Girl Project
"She continues to tell her painful yet hopeful story in Dear World....giving a fuller picture of how their family, along with many others, have been affected by the ongoing war."–Bustle
"A harrowing memoir of life under siege....an unadulterated account of war through the eyes of a child."–REUTERS

Beautifully done. I bought this book not knowing what to expect since the author is 9 and I followed some of the grim story of East Aleppo in real time. It was a bittersweet read but easier than I had expected. Bana has a good, honest, lovely voice(I sympathize with her passion for dolls. I always wanted a barbie too and a baby sister with blond hair.) and I loved the interludes written by her mother. The book was about the siege of Aleppo yes, but it was also about mother-daughter love and love of a fallen city. I only hope that those watching the news about Ghouta will read this and think of Bana and her mother and remember that there are more tragedies in the making that need to be averted.

Eight-year-old Bana Alabed spent six years in a warzone. Known for tweeting during the siege of Aleppo, Dear World is her story of growing up in Syria. It’s written quite simply, sometimes with an overabundance of optimism (she is only 8 after all!). Every once in a while there is a bit written by her mother inserted that explains things Bana didn’t know or understand. Her mother’s parts are written as if it was a letter to Bana. Dear World is heartbreaking and horrifying and also hopeful all at the same time. I highly recommend reading it.

A seven-year-old tells her story of war in Syria. With help from her mother, she began to Tweet out her concerns, becoming an enemy of the state. No child should have to endure this. Her courage and the support of her mother are admirable and inspiring. Read this and then figure out a way to support a refugee near you. Help them find a little piece of heaven, like the Turkish people helped this little girl.

I'm sorry to see all the one-star reviews, whether they're motivated by anger, jealousy or politics. Reading the experience of war through a child's eyes is a sobering, broadening experience that ought to create empathy. Naturally, Bana's mother helped with the writing. Laura Ingalls's daughter helped her to polish her books, which makes them no less classic. In this case, the connection is even stronger: Bana's mother lived through the same bombing of Aleppo.

I bought this book for a friend of mine who is working with a Syrian family sponsored by her church. She loved the book and lent it to her 12 year old granddaughter who could not put it down. It is a book for adults from the perspective of a girl but it is also appropriate for mature 11-12 year olds.

A book written by a little girl with the help of her mother based on her personal experience in the Syrian war. Everyone has something to say about Syrians... but this book gives not only Bana, but all Syrians a chance to speak for ourselves. Id recommend this book to anyone whose genuinely interested in Syria, it's people and how this war changed our lives.

Got this book to preview as a novel study for my 4th graders. It's REALLY good. I am excited to share Nana's experiences with them to give them a greater understanding of the world.

The Shame of the World
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 13, 2017
It is hard to write a literary appraisal of such an emotive issue as Syria is and the soul destroying years it's people have had to endure....so I won't....What the so called Civilised Countries put the tragic people through must be as awful in context with what my father suffered in Japanese Prisoner of War Camps in the 2nd World War when the "glorious " end to the European War and it's wild celebrations and the way soldiers from Far East war were slipped back into England not wanting to advertise their perilous state...
So Bana your courage and fortitude in one so young and what you had to endure however much impact you actually put into the book I would give you 20 stars if I could even if you wrote only one page....
The horrendous years as the "Brave Leaders " used Syria as their own playground while the World to their eternal shame just looked on....

Amazing!!

Amazing!!!!! Though it would be from Bana's own words which would be great but her mothers input really put everything into perspective. Gave it as a Christmas gift and would pass it on many times over. Excellent read for kids and adults alike. Definitely gets the message through that we are really all alike. Thoroughly recommend it!!!!

To see them happy and safe means everything to me
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 4, 2017
In the last days of Aleppo my heart was in my mouth 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for Bana and her family. To see them happy and safe means everything to me, as does another big slice of Aleppo-that-was that I came to love as if I had also been born there.
Brilliant family, brilliant book, be glad that fate let you visit their lives.
