Dearly Departed is a YA paranormal novel with a kick and a twist. Rachael Rawlings has made a realistic world with the ups and downs of a teenager living alone besides a graveyard. The world building in this story is believable and the characters strong.
I have to say that Dorothy (or Dot, Dotty, Thea whatever she is named in this story) is my favorite.
She is her own strong heroine, she is smart, creative and how creepy the situation is... She just confronts it, head first! I don't know how I would have handled it if I was a Teenager without my parents living in that strange place and I would see a man wondering in my back yard at night. How pretty he may be!
And speaking about he, the mysterious man that wanders the graveyard at night with a smile that melts your insides. *Sign* Thomas is set as a strong character, mysterious and dark and of course Dot can't resist to find out his story. If you want to now it too, you just have to read the book. No spoiler here this time. Sorry!
Dearly Departed is not the Paranormal Romance you are used to read about on my blog but tI believe this story that will fit with you. With the Mystery, Romance and Paranormal events combined this is certainly a book worth reading. At the end of the book there is also a sneak preview of book 2.
I am curious what book 2 will bring me, I have put it on my to-be-read list!
I now wish that I had saved it for last, because none of the other local works can even compete with this one. Classically following other young adult supernaturally themed books, this one focuses around a teenage girl who, through pure curiosity and the help of her best friend, begins to uncover the secret of a mysterious young man who keeps appearing in the grave yard behind her house. This is very much in the same vein as the "Twilight saga" novels, but speaking as someone who has read Stephanie Meyer's bestsellers, Rachael Rawlings' "Dearly Departed" should at least get as much attention, if not more.
Though I certainly won't claim that this is the best young adult novel out there, but compared to other more famous works in the genre, this is a masterpiece. It's clear that Rawlings knows what it means to be an author, and how to weave her story in a way that will keep the book firmly in the readers hands until the last page. I can't wait to get my paws on the next book in the series.
I highly recommend this book to anyone searching for something similar to the "Twilight" books, but with much better writing, more realistic (less dramatic) romantic intrigue, and characters who are believably flawed.
