When Lara Radburn arrives at her friend’s house, she finds Crystal bludgeoned to death with the statue she was sculpting and her four-year-old daughter missing. With the help of artist Dane Lanford, Lara finds Karma. Instead of closure and a happy ending, Lara finds herself immersed in a life-threatening struggle against an evil, faceless killer who will strike again.
She can trust no one. Sheriff Scott Tyler’s adamant denial that Lara’s brother was murdered and his refusal to continue the investigation into the hit-and-run accident that took Mark’s life makes Scott a suspect in Lara’s book. And how can she fight an obstinate man with a gun and a badge and the unrealistic expectation of luring Lara away from her dream job in New York and turning her into his wife in rural Quachita Springs, Arkansas?
Complicating her life even more, Lara realizes she is falling in love with ex-felon Dane Lanford. She yearns to trust him, but he is the sheriff’s number one suspect in Crystal’s murder. He may or may not be Karma’s father and he may or may not want Lara’s valuable land for his artist’s colony. Would he kill Lara to get it?
Even childhood friend and realtor Joan Sommers seems unworthy of Lara’s trust, and the shadow wife of her late father’s best friend seems totally unhinged and perfectly capable of murder.
Rejecting advice to place Karma in foster care and go back to her busy life in New York, Lara is determined to mother the young child.
Danger moves closer. Karma is the only one who can identify the killer. When the young child is kidnapped, fear for the child’s safety overrides every aspect of Lara’s life.
Shortly after, Lara becomes the target of someone who wants her to leave. Are the death threats really directed at her, or at the child who may have seen her mother's killer? Is the handsome stranger, newly released from prison, a man Lara can trust .. or is he the cold blooded killer?
I enjoyed the storyline very much and I fell in love with Karma. The characters seem to be fine-tuned. My only complaint would be the sheriff who, at times, was a bit over the top. Being this is taking place in a small town, maybe law enforcement can afford to be different from what you would normally expect.
There is a lot of action.. and more than one dead body shows up. I disliked a couple of people .. but I'm pretty sure that is what the author was aiming for. There were actually a couple of mysteries...and I did guess one right. But the real mystery of the killer was not revealed until the very end...and it wasn't who I was betting on.
Very good book overall! And I really liked the cover!
Many thanks to Vickie Britton who so graciously sent me the e-copy in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
