From the Back Cover

Death is the end, and if a man doesn't speak before it silences him, then his deepest secrets go with him.

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Greg Iles comes an e-original novella featuring former prosecutor Penn Cage, a story of family secrets and justice denied, plus an excerpt from his new novel,Natchez Burning.

When a heart attack sends Penn's father, Tom Cage, to the ER, Tom begs that his son be brought to his side to hear a dying declaration. But when Penn arrives, Tom denies ever making the request—keeping his secrets for another day.

The emergency hurls Penn back to a chilling case in Houston, where he worked in a DA's office known as the "death factory," which sent more killers to death row than any other in America. While Penn cares for his ailing wife, a tormented forensic technician brings him evidence of a crime lab in chaos, throwing past convictions into doubt and begging Penn to prevent an imminent travesty of justice. With the desperation of a man fighting death in his own home, Penn must find a way to bring the machinery of the death factory to a halt.

Included here is an extended sneak preview of Natchez Burning, the first installment in an epic trilogy featuring Penn Cage.

I have been a fan on Greg's since I first cracked the binding on my copy of Spandau Phoenix so many years ago, but the story that really got my attention was that of a former prosecutor by the name of Penn Cage. From the moment I delved into The Quiet Game, I was obsessed with the picture that Iles was able to paint of these characters and of Natchez, Mississippi. Penn Cage remains one of my favorite protagonists in literary history, and his father Tom is right behind. When The Devils Punchbowl left us all hanging in suspense all those years ago, I was devastated at the idea that I would have to wait so long for the conclusion. I didn't realize how long it would turn out to be, and it has been an excruciating wait.

That being said, Iles is back in full force with this new release. The Death Factory welcomes back Penn, Caitlin, Annie, Tom, Peggy, and all the majesty of Natchez in the way that only this author could. What is even more exceptional, though, is the introduction to a few new characters in these short pages, one of which is Sarah Cage - who, granted, is not a new addition to the story but in this case is given a life of her own. Fans of this series will be overwhelmed with emotions as we get to really feel what Penn's experience was with Sarah - in her life as well as in her death.

This was a long time coming, and as a reader I am overjoyed at the results. I can't wait to pick up my copy of Natchez Burning next month, but in the meantime The Death Factory certainly was a welcome reprieve from the wait. In terms of satisfaction, reconnecting with these characters and this story felt like nothing short of coming home.

This 100 page novella serves as a bridge between the last Penn Cage novel, The Devil's Punchbowl (2009), and the new Natchez Burning (April 2014) which will be the first of a new Penn Cage trilogy.

While I haven't read the previous Cage novels, I have had the pleasure of reading an advance copy Natchez Burning (alert: it is a great read!). First things first: you don't need to read the previous novels. You will be able to start with Natchez Burning and get full enjoyment from the book (and I am known for being very nearly obsessive-compulsive about reading books in order). But if you have been reading the Penn Cage novels all along, you're going to love this. And this novella makes the perfect bridge.

This novella fills in a very interesting small void in Natchez Burning. It's not a necessary read by any means, but a very enjoyable one. For the e-book price and 100 pages, you cannot beat the value. This new Penn Cage trilogy is going to be a best-seller in my estimation - for good reason! - and if you plan on enjoying it, this is an excellent addition to the entire experience. Highly recommended!

The Death Factory has several interesting characters, but the book abruptly ends and no story is ever told, This was the only Iles I have read that was not worth my time or money. Moral of this story is do not buy a Greg Iles novella.

I can't believe that it was a book, it was more of a prologue nothing seemed to be of any significance and I paid money for it. I do appreciate the writing of Greg Iles, but seriously this was a rip-off, basically the storyline met nothing.

This was a waste of money. If you just go ahead and buy Natchez Burning you will get the same material which is repeated word for word. I think this was an attempt made by the publisher to appease the fans who have been waiting so long on a new Greg Iles Novel. Shame on you!

I have missed Mr. Iles and was so delighted that we got to have a novella to get us back into that Natchez way of thinking. Next month the 29th of April to be exact can't get here soon enough. Already on pre-order, great price point for an 800page book. Welcome back Greg, you were missed by this reader and many others. ;)

This novella is mostly an update on aspects of the life of fictional Penn Cage, the Natchez, Mississippi, lawyer of heroic proportions. It particularly details some of his life as a prosecutor in Houston before returning to Natchez. If you are a Penn Cage fan, you may appreciate this story. Otherwise, you may want to skip it, as it does not contain much of the "thriller" content that Iles generally writes. However, it does contain a pretty good indictment of Texas "justice", the Death Factory of the title, which I found interesting, though maybe less so than the novel by Grisham on the same area.
