I would like to recommend to this author "Death" by Shelly Kagan for another perspective. But, what I truly like is the heartfelt honesty that this author gives us when telling us about how bad death is, which to me may explain why he is a Christian in the first place. In this case it seems purely emotional. He can't tolerate a life without an everlasting life. This view depresses him so much that, to me, explains why he is willing to bet on things wishful.
Be that as it may, wishful doesn't mean he is right. It may very well be as grim a picture as he paints. No amount of wishful can change that. It is what it is.
One of the few Christian reads that I think has some merit just to help us understand the mindset.
