"Fabulous...as usual, a real gem... a fast-paced story that includes tricks and plotlines galore. From murder to drugs to romance, Beaton provides many new characters while also bringing back some old favorites. Hamish, as always, is a riveting character that sees many things the others cannot, and when the bodies start piling up, Hamish's talents bring everything to a shocking, thrilling close."

Still, the book contains some surprises, including one that involves Hamish MacBeth's pet wildcat, Sonsie. It is sure to tug at the reader's heart. Fans of the series may even shed a tear or two. Sonsie may be gone, but she is surely not forgotten.

Meanwhile the minister's wife is trying to find a good woman to take Hamish in hand after the breakup of his latest relationship. What follows is a complex story about smugglers, a spate of apparently unconnected murders, women scorned and some misguided scheming on the part of most of the series characters.
I enjoyed this latest Hamish Macbeth mystery and loved the way Hamish schemes to stay just ahead of his arch enemy, Blair. As ever the chapter headings are always worth reading. The book is well written and the author manages to bring the disparate plot strands together to make a satisfying whole as well as a unexpected ending. I certainly didn't work out who the murderer was. Hamish Macbeth fans will love this latest episode.
