All in all, what I really took from Inception was that I found some understanding and learned to not hate Jeffery Parker as I had grown to in the rest of the series, and to have a new respect for Clyde. Jeffery. Poor, poor Jeffery. I actually feel sympathy for the character now. He wasn't the heartless ass we all thought he was, but a victim of circumstance, and it brings new light to his character. It was a great surprise that she incorporated Clyde's story into the prequel as well, and I really enjoyed that more than words can fathom.
Overall, the only thing I felt the book was actually missing was an explanation of Clyde's attraction/connection to the female officer in the rest of the series (who's name, at this point in time, eludes me since I haven't re-read the series in a while and she was never mentioned in this book.) But I feel like with the information given, you can read between the lines and assume that the connection is because she's his (many times great) granddaughter... But it still would have been just a tad nice to have the final clarification. But it is still great to guess!
Anyways, definitely pick this book up if you get the opportunity... Even though it's a prequel and not as long as the rest of the series, it still leaves you wanting more and wishing for it to keep going. I know I'll be very sad when I go to pick up "Death Weeps" and have to come to the slamming realization that that's it... The series is finally over and done. Maybe that's the true reason I've been putting off picking up "Death Weeps" since it came out... But anyways, I can personally suggest that waiting until after you've read the last book, or at least the next to last book, before actually picking up "Inception". I feel like the insights you gain from this book are more heart wrenching and real if you've followed the rest of the series and fallen in love with the story and the characters like I have.
I was always interested in how the Pulse technology came to be, as well as the beginning of the paranormal ability screenings. I had this nagging feeling in the back of my head during the first two books that something may not have been totally "right" with that process, and this caused me to be a bit suspicious of Caleb's father. Luckily, he's one of the characters followed and his role is all of this was cleared right up. I appreciated how the author gave us this glimpse into the past; it just adds to the already amazing world-building.
It was fun getting to see the characters in a different light, and that's why I would recommend sticking to reading this one third. I believe it would take away some of the mystery of Clyde and Jeffrey that comes with meeting them in Death Whispers rather than in Death Inception. There are also a few scenes in the series' present day that will make more sense if you've already read their occurrence in full. There are no spoilers, so you would still be safe to read this first if you so choose. Some mid-series novellas are completely useless, but this is not one of them. It may not be necessary to the plot, but it definitely contains some insightful information that you won't want to miss out on.
