With “Death of the Big Kahuna” she takes a break from the “Cookies & Chance” and “Cindy York” series and creates a new series which imho is best of all three. The main heroine (Carrie) is a very strong willed character who land in Hawaii following her boyfriend in an attempt to keep their relationship afloat. After starting a new job as a waitress she stumbles upon the body of her new boss and the mystery begins.
I found the story flowed very well and unlike Catherine’s other books I did not know who the killer was until the end which was fun. I honestly thought the story was going to go one of two directions and it ended up going in a 3rd direction which was nice. The characters are very well written and Catherine continues her trend of writing strong secondary main characters (Keanu).
If you liked Catherine’s other books you will love this one. To first-time Catherine readers who like murder mystery-lite books buy with confidence you will not regret it.
On a last note: Am I the only one who wishes all 3 series takes place in the same Cathy-verse and want a cross over ?
-very easy to read writing style
-Feels fresh since it is a new series with all new characters
-nice well drawn out characters
-Genuinely did not figure out who the killer was until the reveal
Worth The Money: Yes
Would I Recommend It: Yes
Keanu’s prophetic comments saying everyone had a reason to want Hale dead seems very accurate. From harassed waitresses and underpaid chefs to a very angry wife scorned, there seems to be more motives than the police could ever manage, especially when the police didn’t even notice a key piece of evidence was unaccounted for. Carrie decides she needs to take life by the palm trees and figure it out on her own uncovering betrayal, a tragic past, and a key on the stairs. Circumstantial circumstances may make the new girl the perfect patsy, but true friendships may save Carrie from disaster.
This book written by Catherine Bruns is the sixth in Gemma Halliday Publisher’s multi-author series Aloha Lagoon Mystery, and it just may be my favorite. Catherine offers a clever bite from ‘Karma’ giving many of us, who have suffered working for an insufferable boss, a cathartic experience. The characters are well developed people you might just recognize as friends, family, or co-workers. Carrie is a bruised soul for whom you are sympathetic, and that keeps you engaged with her journey and the strength she finds. Descriptions bring the humidity and the tropical aromas to life, and dialogue is as engaging as eavesdropping. This is a marvelous reading journey for it’s humor, suspense, and satisfying resolution.
What happens next is how life goes on in spite of tragedy. The investigation, Carrie breaking up with her boyfriend (who has turned out to be a thoughtless two-timing jerk) and moving out of his apartment, trying to figure out who killed Hale, getting to know Keanu, and auditioning for a local theater production. The solving of Hale's murder is an important element in the book, but the other facets of Carrie's life make this book more believable than many cozy mysteries.
Ms Bruns is a good author and a perfect choice to write an episode of Aloha Lagoon life. Her characters are believable and well developed. The mystery was well written and kept the reader guessing. I highly recommend this latest addition to the series for all cozy mystery lovers.
