The characters in this story continue to develop, and as a reader you are drawn into Alyssa's intense desire to save her partner. As she finds herself falling in love with Xavier, so too do we. This intriguing world is not your typical vampire/supernatural existence - here it's a burden, and many abnormals wish only to live a quite life pretending to be regular humans. Despite their powers, or perhaps because of them, they are hunted and persecuted. As with the other Abnormals books, the plot moves quickly and is filled with action and chase scenes. It seems Alyssa never gets a chance to catch her breath before she is once again thrown back into the fray.
I volunteered to review an ARC of this novel.
Backing up...something's wrong with Xavier, and Alyssa finally finds out the story: when Xavier's battle partner was turned into a Shadow Wraith, her turning also affected Xavier in that he, too, would become one in time. Alyssa was not about to let that happen (yay Alyssa!) so she took on a perilous journey to visit with Death. (And Death is not the Grim Reaper, either. It was very refreshing and unique). However, in waking up the piece of death inside of her that would ultimately save Xavier, she's getting closer to becoming the Dark Pentagram which is what Thoreau wants. And btw, Thoreau is still a menace, and I won't say why. What happens is heartbreaking, actually.
Also? This whole Shadow Wraith thing being passed on via a bond is so neat! I mean, sucky for the characters, but cool in terms of the story.
Yeah, so I see the seeds of a romance forming, and that's cool. There is more to be done before Alyssa and Xavier can save the world. Looking forward to the next installment.
Bottom line: Simply a great addition ti the series. Great plot. Great characters. Great world-building. Great writing.
I loved the storyline to this book, I can't wait to get my hands on the next book to find out what will happen next on the life's of Alyssa and Xander. The storyline is filled with emotional content from pain to love and you learn so much more about the characters and who they really are inside, inner barriers start to come down and let others in. The plot in this tale is so addictive, like every other Holly Hook book I have read. She has a way of writing that addicts you and makes it so you can't stop reading the pages! I love her books and I can't recommend her books highly enough especially this series!!!
Death magic picks up right where Book 2, Fire magic ends and Alyssa and Zavier have the task of resurrecting Leon, and by default Alluna, before they can leave the ruins they are trapped in.
This series keeps upping the ante with the drama, thrills, tension and danger that Alyssa and Zavier find themselves in. There are twists and turns that Holly Hook is known off and makes for an interesting and unique YA urban series.
I look forward to reading the next instalment to see how it all continues.
