While struggling with her private life, she catches a confusing case. A man is found murdered in his home and his wife is missing. As more women disappear, it becomes apparent these women are all connected by having given a daughter up for adoption.
A daughter is taking these women in order to test each one to figure out which is her mother. As every woman fails, they are killed and there is no attempt at subterfuge with disposal of the bodies. This daughter begins to set her sights on Ruby as her real mother. A chilling race against time ensues to keep more women from disappearing, including Ruby herself. As evidence rolls in, Ruby is left wondering if her criminal love is involved or if he is her last line of defense.
Even though she is living a life of extreme contradictions, Ruby is a relatable character. Her soft spot for a bad boy is the story of many women's lives. But this bad boy has a heart of gold which endears him to the reader. Even though they are polar opposites, this is a couple you can't help rooting for!
As a detective, Ruby is steadfast in her conviction to solve this case. She is willing to cross the line in order to solve this case which only makes her more admirable for the reader. She shoots from the hip, but leads with her heart.
This book is a thrilling ride that blurs the boundary of what is right and what is wrong. The plot is terrifying yet somehow heartbreaking. Never once is the suspension of disbelief broken, leaving a story I was immersed in and never able to get out. This is a book that will stick with me and left me desperate for the next.
I received a copy of this book for free from NetGalley.com in exchange for an honest review.
I have already pre-ordered, Silent Victim, which comes out March 2018!! Ms. Mitchell can't write fast enough for me. :-)
I would say "Death Note" was worth reading.
Also, I need a break from psychological woman- protagonist thrillers. Granted, they're popular now, and if you enjoy the genre, this book would satisfy.
