Ms. Dean has created a frightening scenario that puts her heroine in the worst possible situation, professionally and personally. She does this skillfully, and I blame her for my lack of sleep over the past few nights! (Husband: Leah, go to sleep. Me: I will, I will! I just want to finish this chapter.):-) At the same time she develops sexual tension and a satisfying romance between her hero and heroine without going into graphic detail.
It is also the second book that reveals the writer's true art of storytelling, and Miss Dean has done it with great panache.
I applaud her writing skill and plot prowess in Death Offerings (The Northland Crime Chronicles Book 2). The journey of Monroe and Lane continues in a well-paced drama where romantic tension builds and obstacles still keep them apart, which appeals to my romantic side. I need to connect with the characters to stay engaged.
The suspense of the story kept me guessing until the very end of the book, which my brain really appreciates. It's that "sitting on the edge of my seat" that provides satisfaction when the story closes. When I came to "The End" I wished that Book 3 was available. I can't wait to buy it and read it.
I am happy to say that Miss Dean has told me that 2013 will bring The Northland Crime Chronicles Book 3, so stay tuned!
Death Offerings (The Northland Crime Chronicles Book 2)
Inconsistency #1- The first time we see Coburn at the carnival he is described as "tall, blonde and charming". Paragraphs later, when describing her niece Sierra's looks, we are told "Sierra had Naomi's eyes and Coburn's dark hair". Which is it? Is he blonde or dark haired? Not that it's important but still.
Inconsistency #2- this is the big one. More than once we are told that Monroe is 37, both in this book and in the previous one. We are also told that she was born in 1971 AND we are told she was 12 in 1983 when her friend Katie was killed. Given all this information and some simple math, the book should be taking place in 2008. Given that the penny killer uses pennies from 2010 AND it's mentioned that 2010 was two years earlier, it must be 2012 when the book takes place, which means that Monroe should be 41, not 37! Again, not necessarily critical, just irritating.
As a whole, not quite as good as the first one, but still entertaining. And maybe those inconsistencies can be fixed and updated in a new kindle file?
Good job, Alicia!
