Editorial Reviews

Review

A clever whodunit that'll keep you turning the pages frantically to uncover the murderer. This is a well-written mystery novel that will stump even the most dedicated armchair sleuths. Death by Romance is expertly crafted with each chapter heightening the suspense and intrigue. As the suspect pool deepens, so does the entertainment factor. Highly recommended for readers who enjoy intelligent mystery novels. Self-Publishing Review, 5 Stars

"The twist of the story.... WOW!!!  The characters suck you in but the plot keeps you reading! And if you think this will be one of those books that you'll be able to lay off to the side for just a few minutes, think again!! Once you start, you're in... there's no turning back, there's no 'one more page', 'one more chapter'... none of that... you start it, make sure you don't need to do anything and no one needs you, they will find you zoned into this read!" I loved that this book tapped into a little-known legal loophole as its premise. The main characters are so well drawn and the plot is so full of twists and turns, you really have no clue who the good guys and bad guys (and that includes the gals) are until the very end. Ripe for a sequel, I hope we see more from debut author Kennison very soon!

This fast moving mystery poses an unusual plot involving a well developed cast, most of whom are scrambling to hit the jack pot by tapping the fortunes of the very rich using a "perfectly legal" scheme. Things go terribly wrong and become increasingly complicated as it falls in the lap of Detective Ryan Hamlin to sort out every clue and discover the murderer of the latest wealthy mark. A reliable page turner and a highly recommended entertainment read by Anne Kennison.

Wealthy CEO, Gordon Taylor, is murdered a few months after his seventh wedding anniversary. While the nuptial year offers no immediate significance, his bereaved wife, Jessica, knows that her marriage to Gordon is designed to be short-lived—part of the arrangement in the ultra-guarded Romance, Ltd. partnership. Detective Ryan Patrick Hamlin, who handles the case, is at a complete loss with a growing list of possible suspects and no incriminating evidence. Five months later, Ryan receives his first tangible data. Although delighted with the find, Ryan’s sleuthing stirs up a flurry of convoluted events before he is able to pinpoint the real culprit.

Rising mystery writer Anne Kennison spins a unique twist to the concept of romance in her debut novel. Kennison’s third person narrative centers principally on Detective Hamlin, Jessica, and—to a lesser, but equally important, degree, Mavis Strong, Jessica’s so-called “partner in crime.” Surrounding her main players with a colorful foiled cast, Kennison provides her audience with reader “windows” into the lives of three very different individuals—all who have personal struggles, yet have distinct viewpoints on romance—amid a heinous crime investigation.

Ryan, a hard-boiled detective, has his own behind-the-scene issues, when his life goes awry after the love of his life dies and conflict erupts after he is left to raise his only son. Entering into magnificent wealth, Jessica’s lifestyle drastically changes when she marries Gordon—the man she’s not expected to love, but does anyway. And then there is Mavis, who is the mastermind behind the covert partnership—her solution to getting out of her fraught middle-class environs.

This is a fast, fun read. Plot centers around a very, very clever way to get rich (and I assume it is legal
as the author's bio indicates she is an attorney). Had no idea who-did-it until the reveal. Kept me
guessing until that point.

Awesome! A suspenseful murder mystery that kept me turning pages! The characters are well defined, no surprises from their actions and the final twist made perfect sense when it happened but at no point did I see it coming. I was as confused as the detective, wondering if he had the right guy or if it was this guy or maybe that woman....it was great!

As an independent reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock, I have to give this five fangs even though its not my normal genre. While I do read and enjoy mysteries, it's an occasional thing. This one kept me interested from the first chapter to the last. It's great for all ages, too. Any murder mystery lover on your friends list will enjoy this!

Well written and fluid read. Characters are believable and well developed along with the story with an interesting unpredictable twist at the end. Have read the first three books of the Chief Inspector Gamache novels which are light and enjoyable but easy to put down and not as well written as Death by Romance which as soon as I put it down wanted to pick it back up. I am looking forward to Anne Kennison's next book which I understand is in production!

I just finished reading Death by Romance, a novel by Anne Kennison. While I have to be honest and mention that I am not a fan of murder mysteries, I have to say that death by romance caught my interest from the first page and kept me going right to the end. It is a splendid whodoneit. It is extremely well written with great discriptive nuance and lots of the kind of details that make the story interesting. In fact, the romance concept is intriguing. The characters are well defined and share a wealth of emotions. They are human with both good points and flaws which serve to make them real to the reader. As someone who lives in the Richmond area, the plot points that included nearby locations made the story even more accessible, though I don't think you lose a lot if you are not familiar with our city. I can strongly recommend death by romance and hope you will give it every consideration.
