Ochiltree's first novel K.u.K. was so much fun, I immediately got this one. It was excellent! I lived in Vienna for three years and studied the pre-WWI era in some depth. I was impressed not just how well Ochiltree knows his stuff, the coffee houses, neighborhoods, social groups, and even the famous cemetery--but then was able to also pull it into a fast-paced, fun yarn. Ochiltree's characters such as von Falkenburg and the bad guy, Putzi, are so lifelike for that period! His social and historical accuracy makes everything more believable, and more fun. I didn't want to put this book down. Enjoy!

Van Falkenburg does not want to die. However, he has been brought up in a world where a gentleman's honor is believed to be more precious than life; a principle for which men sometimes give their lives. Now, he is faced with the most important decision of his life, a decision to be made on that very principle.
Death Waltz in Vienna is a story of love, honor and intrigue, a wonderful historical novel based in Vienna prior to WW1. It is a novel well worth reading. I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this mystery set in 19th century Vienna. The story was good and well written: the characters interesting. The detailed background of the story was a special bonus. The historical period is well described as are the social rules of the time, which drive the action of the characters. The background was detailed enough to be interesting and render the characters more understandable, but not drawn out so much as to interfere with the action. I am looking forward to a sequel, and other books by this author.

Just a note to tell you how much I enjoyed this book. Having spent several summers in Vienna, I especially enjoyed all the street names and real directions that are built into the story. The book kept my interest right up to the end, which might be tough since we all know that the hero will live through it all, but none the less it was really nicely put together.

This was an excellent, really surprisingly good, suspense novel set in the declining years of the Austro-Hungarian empire (just before the first world war). It grabbed me from the beginning, Worth the read.

Set in late 1800's Vienna, this book offers a look at cultural and social attitudes as well as the issues leading to the eventual dismantlement of the vast Austro-Hungarian Empire. Old traditions are adhered to, honor is everything, and when an army captain is unable to pay his debts, the only honorable way out is to shoot himself.

An impoverished captain from an aristocratic family is framed and given a week to prove his innocence. If not, he must kill himself. Captain Von Falkenburg wants to live, he's just fallen in love, and he determines to find out who set him up and why. He hasn't a clue, but he follows a string of minor hunches. His hunt takes him into both the rich and the seamy sides of Vienna. A grim view of Franz-Joseph in his waning years, an emperor who worked sixteen hours a day to rule his motley people, and who struggled to arrest the approaching demise of his empire. The final two scenes, high stakes baccarat and a duel, had me racing through the pages.

However, the writing verges on dry, is repetitious, disjointed in places, and goes on for too long. Von Falkenb'''urg is a cold and distant character. While I shared his urgency to solve the mystery and absolve himself from blame, I never felt a gripping concern for his fate.

This was a wonderful explanation of the chivalry that still held the Western cultures Before the First World War. The word honor still held a meaning and though it was carried too far in some respects, not doing a dishonorable act could still hold a man to his course. Since that is not a thought we hold today it will be difficult for modern readers to understand a man like this hero and others like the heroes of Anthony Hope or Gene Stratton Porter. Ah, it was a golden time for novels at least.

This book takes place one week in 1906. Captain Von Falkenberg is accused of treason, and given one week to disprove the evidence which the Army holds against him, after which time they will expect him to take the "gentleman's way out" and commit suicide. His figuring out who is behind the forged evidence and how to get proof is well written. And, of course, there's a beautiful, wealthy young widow to provide the love interest, pushing the Captain all the harder to clear his name.
