When I started reading, I didn’t know how death could be a concept. It became clear later. In the process, I learned to appreciate the protagonist's, Murph, special life journey. He is a bright young man, sheltered from everyday traps everyone living outside of his desert environment experienced. It was interesting to me to read about a second character, Father Saul, who was dead through the book, yet alive though Murph’s mind. I found the philosophy courses Murph attends at the university, sifted through his thinking, overly interesting. The playful love story added softness to the harsh experiences Murph went through. That included the horrors of Vietnam, unfair jail time for his innocence.
