About the Author

Sarra Cannon writes contemporary and paranormal fiction with both teen and college age characters. Her novels often stem from her own experiences growing up in the small town of Hawkinsville, Georgia, where she learned that being popular always comes at a price and relationships are rarely as simple as they seem.

As a fan of Sarra Cannon I was eagerly anticipating this book. It did not disappoint.
Sarra has outdone herself - I was sucked in to the story from the first chapter, and I truly cared and worried about the characters.
You wouldn't think that a story based around a zombies apocolypse, witches, and super powers would be so realistic... but it's written in a way that you feel like you're there with the characters, experiencing their terror with them. Suddenly I believed everything that was happening was actually possible, and I've now had zombie dreams for three days straight. I worried about these kids, felt their fear as the virus spread throughout the human population, and lived the confusion, loneliness, and horror of the following weeks.
One of the highlights for me is the main protagonist, Parrish. She's a fantastic modern day herione - spunky, tough, intelligent, individual, and a bit of a punk, and whilst there's some romance in the mix it's a side story, by no means the most important part of her journey. She won't change who she is for a guy, nor will she let it take away from their main goal - survival. Parrish is my new favourite hero.
In an age where there is a slew of post-apocolyptic books, this is one of the few that take you through the how the actual apocolypse happend and it's effects on the kids as the world slowly disintegrates around them. It's a stand out.
Highly recommend.

I don't even know where to begin with this review. I am just blown away over how good this book is that I don't think any words I write would do it justice. This is the most fresh, unique perspective on zombies I've ever seen. The zombie virus was created magically by a trapped, evil sorceress (The Dark One) who is trying to escape. The story is told in third person from six perspectives...Parrish, Noah, Karmen, Crash, The Boy and The Witch, and every word is mesmerizing. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, watching as this virus spreads across the world and kills most everyone. As the five guardians (Parrish, Noah, Karmen, Crash and The Boy) try to find their way to each other, they are being hunted by The Witch, who is minion and servant to The Dark One. If The Witch can kill them, The Dark One will be freed. The guardians have to make their way through regular zombies and super-duper, hyped up zombies, all while discovering that they each have developed unique powers of their own. I can only assume that in future books they will be earth's saviors, at least that appears how it's being set up. Sarra Cannon knocked it out of the ballpark with this book and I am dying for the next one to come out. Write, Sarra, write!!!!

I really, really, really loved this book! I was hesitant when I first started to read it but I quickly got hooked! I love how everything ties together nicely but what a cliffhanger! Please hurry with the next in line. Can you please release it before the fall of 2013, like tomorrow? Lol! Excellent book!

First off, I'm not really a fan of modern zombie stories. All the super virus medical drama annoys me. Death's Awakening however, takes a fun twist on zombie stories, using the paranormal roots zombies came from in a modern, apocalypse setting. I love it.
The characters all have their distinct personalities and it was a lot of fun to see how each one reacted in the story.
With the way it ended I'm left not only wanting but NEEDING the next book in the series.

I'll start off saying that the opening really threw me. I had to read the blurb again to make sure I had the right story. Nothing made sense (until I read further into the book). So I'm going to start my review where the book begins for me...Parrish. She's the school loner and likes it that way. She sees the world without the tint of trying to conform to peer pressure, and I thoroughly enjoyed her character. Not to mention she has some kick-ass moves when dealing with school bullies!

When the world around her breaks down, she panics, but manages to pull herself together. She forms a bond with a few other survivors, which happens to be the hot kid at school she's been crushing on for weeks. Together, they work out a plan to find a safe haven. Only, things don't go right from the start. As their newly discovered powers develop, they must learn to trust one another or become fodder for the zombies.

I enjoyed the interactions between the characters. Each chapter switched off to another character, giving us a little peek into their lives. And for me, it worked. I'm not saying I liked all the characters, but each remained true to themselves. All but the witch. I wasn't able to connect with her at all. Why did she act evil when she hated herself for it? Then we have the story itself—I loved it! The only gripe I had was the span of time seemed to stretch a bit where nothing happened but them trying to survive. I'm not sure I would've noticed if it hadn't been for the ending...or should I say the lack of ending. This was not a complete book. It ended on a cliffhanger where we don't discover what happens to the characters or if they save the world. So very disappointing. While I enjoyed the writing and the story, I won't be picking up the second book unless I know it will be a complete story. Bummer...

I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
