Thanks for visiting my author page! As you read this I'll probably be writing from my tall stone house which was once a school and built in 1902. This is a house that is "new" in English terms, as many of our local villages date back to the 1630's or even earlier.
I live on the edge of the beautiful and literary English Lake District - a place made famous by the poets Wordsworth and Coleridge and love to enjoy walks in this stunning scenery.
The landscape of lakes and mountains where I live is a constant source of inspiration, and provided me with the setting for my first book, "The Lady's Slipper".
My second novel is an adventure set in the smoke and coffee houses of Restoration London. I was born in London, and did my Bachelor of Arts in Scenography and Costume Design there. My early career was spent in the theatre or at the BBC where I worked as a costume designer. So it was a pleasure to re-visit the city during my research for "The Gilded Lily". Though, I have to say, London has changed quite a lot since the 17th century! Much of my research ended up happening in archives or museums.
My third book is a real swashbuckler called "A Divided Inheritance" set in England and Golden Age Spain in Jacobean times. For this novel I persuaded my husband to travel to Seville (no thumb-screws necessary) to research the beautiful Moorish palaces and I also loved investigating the lace trade, and wished I could squash more of it between the pages of my book!
I have also written the Highway Trilogy for younger readers about Lady Katherine Fanshawe the heiress and highwaywoman. My books are published by Macmillan, St Martin's Press and Endeavour Press.
I love to chat, so you can discover more of what I am working on now through my website www.deborahswift.com where you will also find my blog, or follow me on Twitter @swiftstory
