About Debra M. Lewis
Colonel Deb Lewis is a West Point graduate from its first class with women. A retired Army Colonel and Harvard MBA, Deb commanded three US Army Corps of Engineer Districts, including a $2.1B reconstruction program in combat. She survived the 9/11 Pentagon attack while serving on the Joint Staff antiterrorism team. Colonel Deb’s experiences leading while under fire inspired her unique 'Mentally Tough Women' (MTW) program to help women handle more stress - not de-stress - and put it to work for them. MTW arms women (and enlightened men!) with the proven strategies, insights, and tools they need in good times and times of crisis.
Deb's experience is grounded with a clear understanding of extreme adversity and frequent setbacks. Her mental toughness skills shaped her positive outlook on life and leadership. She reminds us that,
“Today’s challenges are tough enough. Leadership boils down to bringing out the best in everyone."
Deb teaches you how to move past life's daily challenges by using stress to your advantage. The skills you gain are like muscle-building. The more you practice - the more your confidence grows. It becomes easier to quickly transform stressful moments, and recover from challenges and setbacks with stronger relationships.
"The better you get at handling stress, the easier it becomes to do insanely hard things and really love doing it."
Her latest book titled, "Why is Pono not Pono Today?" reveals the secret to handling stress within the story using fun cartoons. Set in Hawaii, this heartwarming book and lovable characters offer adults and children helpful ways to understand, discuss, and better handle stress.
She's grateful to be a daughter, sister, wife, mother, pioneer, retired Colonel, Combat Veteran, Infinite-Win Engineer, Author, Speaker, Community Leader, Mental Toughness Expert and so much more...

One teacher chose to read "Why Is Pono not Pono Today?" to her class and said,“I have a student in my class who gets angry and frustrated very easily. On this particular day I decided to read the story to the class she was upset over a small matter and had her head down with her eyes covered. As I was well into the story she would slowly peek and soon she was upright and very interested into the story. She had forgotten what she was angry about and was smiling and participating in the questions I asked stress free and at peace.”
——————————
When asked about the book, the mother of a 5-year-old shared, “She said Pono was angry because all of the people were mean to him. Kuleana helped him get better. She said she showed him love and respect.
Verbatim: She’s in Kindergarten. Much more articulate than I am...right now.”
——————————
Several weeks after introducing the book to her class, a 5th grade teacher wrote, “One of my students came up today and requested to read the (Pono) book (again) saying, “I can feel my mental stability slipping away and I need to respond versus react.”

♥ "Why is Pono not Pono Today?" is a book where kids of all ages easily identify with the normally happy Pono the Bull. Pono snaps after others are mean to him. His friend Kuleana notices what happens and helps to quickly bring back the best in Pono.
Here, tough situations end well through love, creativity, and working closely together. When we learn how to work through the toughest situations together, STRESS becomes our SUPERPOWER.♥
MORE about this special book: The Author - Colonel Deb Lewis faced plenty of stress in and out of the military. One-on-one to leading large organizations - one skill stood out between success and failure, achieving goals and giving up, healthy relationships and toxic ones. It was... HOW TO HANDLE STRESS. Stress skills are essential to strengthen relationships and achieve greater success at work and at home EVERY DAY. Deb wanted to empower others who found themselves struggling to make a difference and unable to handle the stress that goes with it.
Shortly after moving to Hawaii, Deb used cartoons to share a few of her life lessons to teach students at a local college healthier ways to respond to stress. These lessons quickly transformed negative emotions triggered by stress into amazing results. She wanted the essence of these lessons to be simple enough a child could understand and powerful enough to change lives. She was surprised as anyone when this children's book popped out of this process.
After adding a few more illustrations by Greek artist Georgios Magkakis, the Pono story practically wrote itself. Deb began limited print runs of the book to the delight of children, family, and friends.
Stress skills are essential - the younger the better. Because children are the leaders of tomorrow, non-profit groups like Rotary International, Lions Club, and In2 InThinking donated hundreds of Deb's books to local elementary schools.
