This book explains how our monetary system works and how commercial banks create money. The effects of this are examined, along with an alternate monetary system that is vastly superior - which we term Fair Money. Topics covered include: how commercial banks create money, the importance of seigniorage, how quantitative easing works, what monetary policy really means, how inter-bank payments work, the distraction of fractional reserve banking, the Guernsey experiment, the Chicago Plan, the 5 different money classes, why depositors are creditors, the war on cash, how banks buy currency notes, how bank balance sheets work, constraints on money creation, consequences of debt monetisation, the use of misleading terminology, the historical role of gold, the benefits of an asset-based currency, and the transition to a better monetary system. Extracts are provided from the Bank of England, the Federal Reserve System, the International Monetary Fund and the Reserve Bank of Australia.

As someone who's studied finance on a Master level, and knowledge of how the banking system really works, I found this book to be amazingly revealing. The well-referenced book appears to be written for the average Joe to understand the banking system by leaving out the jargon - or where necessary, explaining the jargon - all without compromising the delivery of the information.
Whilst the author does appeal to some authority in the banking sector to validate the points therein, he also dissects fallacies that banks and society have propagated without correction for the modern era. The author goes one step further and even provides a solution for the mess that is our banking sector; a rare addition to these sorts of books.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject, working in the banking industry, politicians and commentators, and generally anyone interested in expose type books. I give this a solid 5/5 stars.

A great place to start with a clear concise volume

This was recommended by the "Best Evidence" Youtube channel. At just over two hundred pages Joshua Maree gives you a crash course in coming to an understanding of how money really works. If only I'd had this book ten years ago I'd have arrived at a clearer understanding of how our monetary system is broken and what it will take to fix it. If you're looking for a place to start then this is the book for you.
