The United States' approach to China since the Communist regime in Beijing began the period of reform and opening in the 1980s was based on a promise that trade and engagement with China would result in a peaceful, democratic state.

Forty years later the hope of producing a benign People's Republic of China utterly failed. The Communist Party of China deceived the West into believing that the its system and the Party-ruled People's Liberation Army were peaceful and posed no threat. In fact, these misguided policies produced the emergence of a 21st Century Evil Empire even more dangerous than a Cold War version in the Soviet Union.

Successive American presidential administrations were fooled by ill-advised pro-China policymakers, intelligence analysts and business leaders who facilitated the rise not of a peaceful China but a threatening and expansionist nuclear-armed communist dictatorship not focused on a single overriding strategic objective: Weakening and destroying the United States of America.

Defeating the United States is the first step for China's current rulers in achieving global supremacy under a new world order based an ideology of Communism with Chinese characteristics.

The process included technology theft of American companies that took place on a massive scale through cyber theft and unfair trade practices. The losses directly supported in the largest and most significant buildup of the Chinese military that now directly threatens American and allied interests around the world. The military threat is only half the danger as China aggressively pursues regional and international control using a variety of non-military forces, including economic, cyber and space warfare and large-scale influence operations.

Deceiving the Sky: Inside Communist China's Drive for Global Supremacy details the failure to understand the nature and activities of the dangers posed by China and what the United States can do in taking needed steps to counter the threats.

Bill Gertz is an award-winning national security journalist and author of eigth books. He is currently national security correspondent for The Washington Times, (washingtontimes.com)

His website is The Gertz File (gertzfile.com)

Bill has an international reputation. Vyachaslav Trubnikov, head of the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service, once called him a "tool of the CIA" after he wrote an article exposing Russian intelligence operations in the Balkans. A senior CIA official once threatened to have a cruise missile fired at his desk at The Washington Times after he wrote a column critical of the CIA's analysis of China. China's communist government also has criticized him for his news reports exposing China's weapons and missile sales to rogues states, accusing him of "spreading lies about China." The state-run Xinhua news agency in 2006 identified Bill as the No. 1 "anti-China expert" in the world. Bill insists he is very much pro-China -- pro-Chinese people and opposed to the communist system.

Former CIA Director R. James Woolsey has stated: “When I was DCI [Director of Central Intelligence] Bill used to drive me crazy because I couldn’t figure out where the leaks were coming from. Now that I’ve been outside for two years, I read him religiously to find out what’s going on.” During the 1990s, Secretary of Energy Bill Richardson told the author: "We talk about your stories at Cabinet meetings.” Defense Secretary William S. Cohen once remarked to China's military intelligence chief that Bill "has access to more intelligence information than anyone I know."

Former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld once told him: "You are drilling holes in the Pentagon and sucking out information."

Among his major newspaper exclusives are reports revealing how China conducted the first flight test of a revolutionary hypersonic strike vehicle that is now believed to be deployed; frequent confrontations between U.S. warships and a Chinese naval vessels in the South China Sea; and a U.S. intelligence report warning that malicious software developed in Balarus had compromised Obamacare computer networks.

Other exclusives have included reports on China's deployment of a new long-range missile, the DF-41; how the Obama administration ignored a major Russian treaty violation by developing intermediate-range missiles banned under the 1987 Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty and how secrets related to the U.S. F-35 jet fighter were stolen through Chinese cyber espionage and incorporated into China's new J-20 stealth fighters.

Bill also was the first to report on Russia's secret development of a new high-speed, long-range nuclear-armed drone submarine.

Bill has been a guest lecturer at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.; the Central Intelligence Agency; the National Defense University at Fort McNair, Washington, DC; the Brookings Institution, Washington, DC and Hillsdale College. He has participated in the National Security Studies Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.

He studied English literature at Washington College in Chestertown, Md., and journalism at George Washington University, Washington, DC. In March 2014, Bill was awarded the Reed Irvine Award for Investigative Journalism by Accuracy in Media. In September 1999, Bill was awarded the Western Journalism Center award for investigative journalism. The United States Business and Industrial Council awarded him the "Defender of the National Interest Award" in June 1998, and in 1997 he was recognized by The Washington Times for excellence in achievement.

China threat much more than you can imagineWhile I am reading this book I felt I returned to my home country, occupied East Turkestan. China called it Xinjiang, it latterly means new territory or new domination. My country actually not occupied by China, at the time China was not existed yet. China and my country East Turkestan were occupied by Manchurian people, which was existed as Qing density. Back to sentry years ago, officially occupied by CCP with Russia’s support. Let’s talk about this book¡ this book brought me back to the my country, Uyghurs’ lives, which I had been lived more than 25 years. This book brought up to the world stories of my two brothers and two brothers in law’s, who were taken to the concentration camps in 2017, more than 35 extend family relatives unknown situations. And there are millions of Uyghurs suffering in the those camps, not yet , about millions of children taken to the orphans school, thousand of women facing to the force’s marriage ... my sister working in the CCP’s labor camps, this book tells about a great humanitarian threat we are facing in the 21 century...Concentration camps , millions of Uyghurs, force marrage , labor camp ....

Disclaimer: I do not pretend to be an expert on all things China. In fact, I know very little about China other than the drips of information I hear on Television and watching an occasional documentary on the country and its people. It is important to understand why I chose this book to read. I saw a brief interview of Bill Gertz and the book was being discussed and it tweaked my interest primarily because both Joe Biden and Donald Trump have made reference to China and how each would deal with the country if they were to be elected in 2020. The two sides could not be more at odds with each other on the subject of China. It is a vitally important subject for Americans to understand and for the future of America as a country. Reading the book seemed like an obvious decision to make provided you want to vote from a position of knowledge rather than a position of guesswork.
Why should anyone want to read this book by Bill Gertz? He referenced a statement in the book that should answer that question when he writes that the next battle for America will probably be fought in space. Like most Americans I have followed the exploits of America’s space program and have remained in awe over its accomplishments. This book changed all of that for me.

You would have to be a fool not to understand that China spies on America and America spies on China. The same holds true for just about any country in the world. Even our allies spy on each other, that is just the way things are. The book is about China and the lengths that China will go including murder to spy on all of its adversaries and especially America. As stated in the book, China has no rule book by which it will play in its quest for world dominance.

I am not familiar with the Chinese language and it was difficult for me to follow the various Chinese personal names or the names of its organizations and cities. Such knowledge was not necessary to understand what Gertz wrote about. His message came across very loud and very clear. China is our enemy and she will do anything and everything to get what she wants – world domination! The book explains how “fear” becomes the weapon of choice for the Communist Chinese Government. The Chinese people fear their government and it becomes painfully clear that America has engaged in appeasement over the last several decades out of fear of what China might do, politically, economically, and militarily. Until President Trump took office, every President chose NOT to confront China and its tactics. To emphasize how important this relationship has become one only need to consider the recent creation of America’s Space Force. I thought it was just an idea to appease America’s thirst for all things relating to space. On the contrary. If you go back to what Gertz said about the next battlefield, you get a hint as to why Trump created the Space Force. China has created a plan to take out America’s use of space through by removing or destroying its satellites. Almost everything we do as a country is in someway connected to the multitudes of satellites. Disable them, and you disable America.

The contents of the book are obviously over my head given my lack of knowledge of China. Even so, it was clear enough for me to understand that EVERY American and EVERY ally of America should either read this book or begin studying China because it will be the next great battle for the entire free world. For people and countries who feel that this is not my problem, if America should ever fall, where will people go? Who will protect freedom loving people and the freedoms they cherish so dearly or should cherish dearly? There seems to always be someone waiting to dominate the world. In my lifetime it was first Germany, then it was the Communist Soviet Union, then it was Radical Islam and now it is Communist China. They just keep coming.
Gertz does not just lay out the problems that Communist China presents to the world, he also identifies the steps that America and its allies should immediately take and one of those steps is accomplished with his book – educate Americans about the goals and ambitions of Communist China!

Who should read this book? Every American would benefit from reading it and should read it, sooner rather than later.
Would I read it again? Probably not. Not because it is not a great read, it can be overwhelming and reading it once should convey the importance of knowing you enemy and what the enemy is capable of doing.
Would I give it a gift? Probably not. It is the kind of book someone would WANT to read to become knowledgeable. If there is no interest, giving it as gift would be a waste of time and money even though everyone ought to read it. It’s not a book someone would want to relax with on a trip to the beach.

Man this book is intense! It will scare the H@#$ out of anyone. You will never look at China the same after this book. It lies right in line with what the world saw over the recent NBA twitter scandal. It also confirms what the PBS show frontline talked about just this week.

The book documents the threat China presents to the world. This threat has been funded by the US through out trade policies. The US plugging China into the world banking system has allowed our money to go to China to fund the actions against us. They have an unmatched spy program. The book documents how they lie to further their policy. The book talked about the development of a base network in Pakistan. The book didn't talk about how China is building a highway all the way across Asia to the Middle East. Their military growth tops the world. It all is incredibly scary.

Outstanding book on how China operates. They steal and destroy American companies. The disappointment for me is when the CEO of Google mislead Congress regarding their business activity in China. The message was simple, Google an American company would not deal...
Reviewed in the United States on October 10, 2019
Author Gertz doesn't pull any punches in outing China as a great threat, as even our worst enemy. Under the leadership of hard-liner Xi Jinping, China wants to assume its ".rightful dominant place as the leader of the world, and to destroy the United States of America." For decades China has conned us into thinking it was not a threat to us, not economically, diplomatically or militarily, despite clear signs to the contrary. Previous administrations before Trump were duped or were feckless in allowing China to become more powerful. For instance, under Bill Clinton technology was allowed to be transferred to China so that Chinese strategic missiles wouldn't blow up on the launch pad, and that technology also allowed China to launch multiple satellites, some of which were essentially space weapons. And Obama sat idly by "ignoring and then covering up China's massive theft of American technolgy," which Gertz estimates now runs about $600 billion annually. Furthermore, "inaction by Obama facilitated the Chinese domination over the strategic South China Sea.

To spread its influence and power, China is undertaking the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which involves dozens of countries in Asia and the Middle East. China provides assistance and loans and manpower to construct public works programs in these nations, many of them Third World countries. Projects like roads, airports, railroads, pipelines electrical facilities, hospitals, on and on. If the loans go into default, China, meaning the Chinese Communist Party and the People's Liberation Army (PLA), take control of those finished project. The BRI also fosters China's establishment of military and diplomatic bases in these nations.

President Trump recognizes that economic security is an integral part of America's national security. Trump is "pushing back against decades of unfair trade and technology practices" by the Chinese. It remains to be seen how effective Trump's tariff and trade strategy against China works out, in my opinion.

The author discusses the possibility of a space war, whereby China would knock out our satellites, by using ground-based directed energy (think:lasers), launched kinetic missiles, and space-based weaponized satellites. Our navigational satellites would initially be disabled, then our reconnaissance satellites, and next our communications satellites.

Gertz also discusses the importance of 5G wireless and wired technology and how China wants to control communications globally. The Chinese company, the world's large telecommunications outfit, Huawei, is fingered as a Chinese Communist Party-controlled espionage entity. Huawei is currently a hot-button topic as I write this review. Trump doesn't trust Huawei when it comes to our national security, and rightfully so.

The author strenuously points out China's unabated desire to take Taiwan into its fold as just another province, with s autonomous nation status being dissolved. China would even engage in a limited shooting war with the United States over this it's asserted.

Gertz lists fourteen steps the United States should take to combat the Chinese threats. These steps involve economic and financial and military and doplomatic measures.

Some readers of this book may think of Gertz as Chicken Little. Not me.

This book is biased in its approach and presents arguments and so-called facts that are unsubstantiated and undocumented. Statements like 'revealed here for the first time', without mentioning sources, is poor scholarship. The information, however founded or unfounded, is decidedly skewed. Good scholarship should be balanced in approach and for any assertions (and opinions) to be taken seriously they have to be backed up with verifiable information and credible sources.
