Editorial Reviews

"Told in a perfect balance of riveting, first-person victim's testimonies and thoughtful, well-researched examinations of aberrant behaviors, Deception in the Pews is a must-read for those yearning for the truth of rarely acknowledged, behind-the-scenes evildoings within many religious institutions. This long-overdue book documents how some pastors, faith leaders and churches--regardless of denomination--manipulate, mislead, abuse, steal and even destroy in the sight of God, and often in His name, for their own selfish gratification and personal gain.

"Whether it's the loss of a child's innocence, the seduction of a doting husband's wife, or the draining of a faithful congregant's lifesavings, this tome lifts the veil on the epidemic of spiritual deception and bares all, asking the hard questions while challenging trusted houses of worship to clean up their act."

 ~ Ronald E. Childs, Chicago-based journalist

About the Author

Erik Campano has reported, and been cited extensively, on religious corruption. A former New York and Connecticut host of NPR's All Things Considered and world news anchor at the public radio networks of France and Germany, as well as blogger at Patheos and columnist at the Columbia Spectator, he has written extensively on sexual misconduct and other kinds of abuse and cover-ups in religion, universities, and other institutions. Campano has been quoted in Newsweek, the Christian Science Monitor, and New York magazine, and has won a Columbia University Service Award for "for contributing to the dialogue about sexual respect around campus." One of his academic interests is in studying PTSD and other health effects stemming from religious abuse and deception, particularly in crisis and post-crisis zones.
