This book made me laugh, gasp, scream & hold my breath. There was one scene that had me howling with laughter. I was reading in bed and woke my husband up at about 1:30am. Yes, I lost sleep over this book and did not win appreciation from my hubby.
I loved Josh's job. I found t fascinating. I loved the intelligence & how this book had me really thinking, trying to figure things out. I loved that characters made appearances from the last book(s) in the series. Great details to add. It was like getting visits from past friends & family.
I loved the mystery so much. The good guys were so fascinating. Really. I loved them. They were complex, interesting, witty and deep. They felt real to me. I seriously HATED the bad guys. I'm talking pure evil... sick-in-the-head evil bad guys. Man, did I want them to die a thousand deaths!
I did think that Josh might have become a bit too much of an angry Neanderthal. I mean, I totally understood his protectiveness, desperation & feelings of helplessness. But it didn't seem to totally jive with who I thought that I knew about his character. Of course, desperation & love can change a person.
I highly recommend this book and especially this series! Keep the books coming, Lisa Clark O'Neill! I love them!!!
First of all, I loved the plot and I loved the idea of these characters. Lisa Clark O'Neill's books are not predictable in the least and I love how she sort of has you guessing throughout as to who the bad guys are and who's behind the whole thing.
Now, why three stars? As a fan of the series it really pains me that this book left me kind of.. eh... even though I was really looking forward to Josh Harding's story.
Reason--everything I liked about the other two books was a bit overdone in this.
There were ~so many POV shifts. I'm talking every twenty sentences. I felt completely disconnected from the characters because I didn't have the time to connect to them. Not to mention headhopping. There's a POV switch and then you realize halfway through it you're back to the previous character. I have no idea what that was about.
Sidenote: for those who care about these things, there's a graphic sex scene in the book (with an abundance of POV shifts as well and it was sooooooo slow).
Sam, the heroine, is portrayed as an abused woman that got out of a controlling relationship et cetera et cetera, yet I thought that what happens at about 70% worked against that characterization. I won't say what it was because it's a spoiler, but the whole thing was just weird and pushy and she just let it happen.
I still loved Josh to bits, though, as well as all the side characters. I'm SO curious about Declan and Rogan, I did a little happy squeal when I saw that next book is Declan's! And it's already out! So yay for that.
I'm happy to note that there's a fourth novel in the series, "Nemesis." I just hope we don't have to wait too long. This time the story is about Declan who just happens to be one SOB. I can't wait to read his story
