Review of previous edition: '... not only an account of a startling piece of philological and archaeological research, but a simple, moving human story.' The Spectator
The languages of the ancient world and the mysterious scripts, long undeciphered, in which they were encoded have represented one of the most intriguing problems of classical archaeology in modern times.

For a picture of how Linear B was deciphered and what we were able to learn about the people who wrote in it (up to 1994, in Chadwick's follow-up to the original editions), this is a splendid introduction, not too simple but still within the grasp of the reader who enjoys puzzles and enigmas. But as a picture of humble spirits working to find a scientific approach to understanding ancient tables, it is magnificent.
This is a book that covers far too many lessons in far too few pages, and is an important read on so many levels because of it.
