Great, Interesting Text

This book was one of two texts used in a psychology class I took this semester entitled "Decision Theory." The topics covered in the text include concepts of rationality, decision making, rationality of action, Bayes Theorem, rationality of judgment, the rationality debate, dual reasoning processes, and metarationality.

I had never studied decision making and rationality before, and I must applaud Stanovich for the way that he approaches the material in the text. He clearly explains concepts, including support for and against them, "real life" applications, and research that has been done. He takes something that would otherwise appear very abstract and makes it much more understandable. He had useful charts and graphs to supplement the text, as well. His overall approach was very methodical and easy to follow. I especially appreciated his approach to Bayes Theorem.

For my psychology class, this text was excellent at explaining material, and it was a very nice addition to what we discussed in lecture. For a casual reader, I believe this text would be good to read. It really breaks down difficult subject matter into something that everyone can tackle. Additionally, the knowledge I have gained from this book has proved to be very useful to apply to my life!

A great introduction to the 'Great Debate' about what it means to be rational

Decision Making and Rationality in the Modern World is part of the Fundamentals of Cognition series by Oxford University Press. Since purchasing this book I have returned to it time and time again. It is genuinely deserving of being seen as ‘fundamental’.

It is deceptively short. At 160 pages in six chapters, it suggests a quick read. If you want to get the most out of this book you’ll take your time. When you reach Chapter Three ‘Judgment: Rationality of Belief’ you will be well on your way to asking a lot of questions about what you believe to be true (and why). This is the point of the book: to encourage us to ask questions of our own thinking.

Plugging a typical paragraph into Hemingway returns a red Readability rating, equivalent to a 19th Grade education. So it’s not going to be a light read. However, the book still serves as an excellent introduction to the field. You just have to pace yourself. A very helpful feature is a bibliography at the end of each chapter. Each chapter concludes with a useful ‘Summary and Conclusion’ section which will keep you anchored.

Stanovich’s opens his concluding section with the observation ‘The best tools of thought are self-correcting because they critique themselves’. This is a great advertisement for making the effort to be the best thinkers we can. And if that’s something that you aspire to, then this book belongs on your bookshelf.

Excellent book, but for the reader who is looking for aq more theoretical and analytical stance

This is an excellent overview of decision making, short rich and to the point. It is a bit different from other recent books in its stance. It looks at judgment and decision making in light of rationality i.e. how well adapted are our actions and our beliefs. If you've read Stanovich's book about the limitations of intelligences tests; the fact that these tests capture only part of what adaptive behavior, i.e. judgment and metacognitive skills you'll see the same orientation in this book. It is very different read when compared to Sheena Iyengar's book and shorter and more focused tan Kahneman's, Thinking fast, thinking slow ( both great books). The introduction introduces his approach to rationality. The next two chapters provide very good overviews of the traditional decision making model and its limitations and on judgment with a focus on departures from a Bayesian normative framework where he introduces research on the cognitive biases approach. The next two chapters put the decision making and judgment chapters in a broader perspective. The book ends with a chapter about metacognitive skills i.e. a decision making model takes the values and goals and give, re he talks about grappling with whether our values and goals to be re evaluated-- a level not much covered in introductory books. This may not be an easy read for some. If your are looking for a practical and easy introduction the Heath's book, Decisive would be an excellent place to start. Overall all-a theoretical yet excellent book.
