Horrible Kindle version but extraordinary story

The 5 Stars is for the book which is excellent! The Kindle version wasn't worth a penny. Misspelled words, grammar errors, punctuation all over the place-beginning, middle and sometimes after every word, garbled and transposed sentences, characters and place names misspelled multiple times, and strange word selections as if from an automatic spellchecker. The main character was mostly Mr. Strang and sometimes Mr. Strong. Inexcusable. So whatever you do, don't spend $7 on the Kindle version because this book is out there as used and even new in hard copy and it is too good to pass up. At 3/4 of the way through I could not put it down and stayed up until 3 am to finish it. It is based on actual events in Greece from 1944 until 1958 and Helen MacInnes makes you feel like you are right there, living the experience. She is a master story teller and this story will stick with you a very long time.

In the finest tradition of suspense, this tale is tightly woven with minimum embellishments and beautifully crafted characters. With each chapter, you are glad that the author leaves the tale unfolding with great tempo. I read this author in my youth and find even more to appreciate years later.
Set in post World War II Greece, the reader can see the beauty of the land and the ocean and sense the depths of time and history that enrich civilization. Bravo, MacInnes

I have been reading Helen McInnes' books since I was a kid (I am so far past that age now). She began writing her novels in the late 30's - early 40's and she died in 1985. Her books were espionage novels and covered the end of WWII into the Cold War period. They are well written and topical for the times, and, sadly, for some of today's stories. Communists versus the rest of the world, etc.
Even though they are written with the mores' and styles of that era (men in suits and ties, ladies in dresses and heels - even just going for a walk) the stories are good.

Ken and Cecelia were such vivid people and the country description was epic. The WWII history had me enthralled as well.

Her books are a realistic glimpse into the life of those undercover agents who fight unknown and unrewarded to guard the freedom we accept as our given right. Or the underground fight during WWII in Europe often with amateurs walking the tightrope of an innocent abroad while helping those who worked to see the Allies won the war.

My old thirty plus year old paperback of this suspense novel fell to pieces I had read so often. Helen MacInnes story of Greece in the early sixites still recovering from WW2 and never forgetting old hates is the theme. Tautly written but relevant 50 years on this is her best book.

Having recently rediscovered Mary Stewart, I was prompted to read this book. It's a similar genre, with a suspense/thriller storyline with added romance. The difference is that Helen MacInnes' plots are political/cold war/spy stories. I loved this book, but found some of the back story confusing. However, I am now on my fourth MacInnes book and have really enjoyed them all.
