At this point, I would recommend that if you need a drill for anything other than infrequent hobby and craft use, you should probably look for a good Lithium Ion powered drill. Black and Decker sells several serviceable lithium ion drills under both its "Black and Decker" and "DeWalt" brands. I own several DeWalt tools and am pleased with them, but do not own any of their lithium ion drills. I recently bought Makita cordless drills for my shop and am content with them, but there may be better options.

Having worked in the construction trades for many years, I have a variety of professional quality corded and cordless drills, but my six year old wanted a "real" drill of his own.Read more ›
I found this locally for about $20. It has great features for the price: cordless, 2-speed (325/650rpm), reversing (to drive screws) and a keyless chuck. The quality is quite good, considering the price. It's well balanced, and seems to have a good amount of power. It's stated capacity is a 1/2" in wood, and 3/8" in steel. The battery pack is built inside. It uses 4/5 sub-C ni-cd cells. The shelf life of rechargeables is about
3 months, so you will need to charge it occassionally.
I did find this one cheaper in Walmart later, but oh well.
I built all the furniture in my new apartment with this guy. Thank goodness I had it.
Powerful enough for the job w/o being too heavy to lug around. Charges just fine.
This drill is relatively lightweight, cheap but not cheap-feeling, and very, very reliable. I actually own a Makita and I prefer this one- mostly due to weight and it being so uncomplicated. After 2 years the batteries still hold charge exceptionally well and the power seems above average for a drill in this price range (Just yesterday I drove a 3in screw into 3inches of hardwood without predrilling) This drill has performed well when being used heavily and is reliable even when the battery has sat for weeks.
I don't think it's the ultimate in power drills, but for the price, I do think it's a 5 star value.

This was my first drill/power tool way back when I first began dabbling in woodwork and working on guitars. I've had it for well over a decade and it still works great. Read morePublished 4 months ago by DrJones84
