When I first used it, I thought it must be really powerful because it was throwing so much stuff that it was hurting my legs. Turns out that it was shooting out string, and the pieces were hitting me. I even had a cut go through my jeans. The string was gone so quickly that I thought it must have come with a starter spool that wasn't a full spool. I went and bought some string and spent30 min winding the double spool. It all spun out immediately. I decided it must be operator error, so I went and bought a new pre-wound spool. That worked better. I got about 2/3 of the way around the house before running out of the $10 spool of string. I can hire a lawn service for less than what this thing would cost me to operate!

After putting away this weed whip following its ground-breaking ceremony, I paused to light a candle for Charles Atlas. It kicked grass in my face and stole away my little old lady. Left me wondering if I'll ever be able to have children again. The grass I was attempting to trim appeared to be frightened as it cowered down to shield itself from this big bully. I had to go back later and cut it with my Winnie-the-Pooh hand trimmer. Like a child learning the hard way that a hot stove should not be touched, I also learned the hard way that safety gear such as double-denim pants, safety goggles, a long sleeve shirt (with collar up), steel-toed boots, Kevlar socks, falconry gloves, and a Darth Vader helmet are not optional if I desired to protect my thin skin from the shrapnel ejected when this weed whip's auto line-feed mechanism unpredictably initiates. Perhaps B&D could design this model's successor with some sort of a warning that would allow the user ample time to seek cover prior to each auto-feed launch. I envision a toy soldier popping out cuckoo clock-style shouting "FIRE IN THE HOLE!" The trigger control has two speeds: Off and Apocalypse Now. A variable speed controller would surely not be difficult to engineer although I am guessing that this development may raise the price by a dollar.

I owned this "grass trimmer" for a year until I realized that I was endangering my neighbors, their property, pets, children, and bystanders with every use. I was also confused about why my neighbors' gas- and battery-powered weed whips were relatively quiet compared to my nuclear model. Imagine my humiliation as I had to don ear protection when using mine and they did not when using theirs'. Why did this 7 amp corded trimmer make more noise than my 11 amp corded B&D lawn mower?

Never buy this trimmer. Black and Decker says 30 day money back guarantee. Can't figure out how that works. Two spools of line in 2 less tha an hour of trimming. Would give zero stars if possible.

Black & Decker should be ashamed for making such a dangerous product as the GH1100. Our old bump-style string trimmer needed to be replaced, so last summer we thought buying the GH1100 was going to be a good decision. We are both tall, and especially liked that you didn't have to bend over to use it.

Got it home and so anxious to try it. First use produced damage to our picket fence--blamed it on operator use. Then the grass got scalped really bad. Again, operator issues. Quickly ran out of line. Replaced with the $10 reel. Husband couldn't figure out what was "biting" his legs--thought it was some over aggressive bugs until he noticed his legs were bleeding from the shards of string line regularly whipping off & hitting him. Same issues wearing long pants, but who's going to be doing that in 90 degree humid weather?

Wasn't aware there were issues with how the lines were wound--anyway we hadn't wound the reel that scarred his legs. Today, he tried to use the product again and wasted several hours trying to make this piece of JUNK work properly. Wonder if Consumer's Reports had average Joes try using this product under normal circumstances. Bet they didn't, or they might have requested a recall. Too late for us to return it, and too afraid to sell it at a garage sale for fear someone might lose an eye or suffer permanent damage to their limbs.

Save your money!!! People write these reviews for good reasons. Wish we had looked more closely at what users had to say rather than Consumer's Reports.

absolute piece of junk. constantly feeds line out, sending 2" lengths of nylon shrapnel into my ankles creating big ol' bleeding gashes. I read the manual over and over again and watched videos to figure out what I was doing wrong in spooling. followed all to a t--it's not pilot error; this product just plain sucks. I finally had enough and grabbed it by the trimmer head and went pete townsend on it by smashing it into pieces on the concrete. I have to give it one star because there aren't any imaginary numbered stars up here.

String feeds out with vigor and for no reason because the length is long enough to cut the grass . You have to stop and manually cut the excess off or it will hurt you . Either by hitting your shoes or your shins with the excess plastic line. I have purchased new factory wound spools of line twice and the same result occurs , too much line feeds out . When it starts the automatic cutting tool built into the guard cuts off small peace's of plastic line hurling those at me cutting my skin and drawing blood . This is a dangerous piece of equipment and have stopped using it this weekend , should have given up on it before this but thought it was me not using it correctly .Black & Decker GH 1100 type 1 is dangerous .
