From the first paragraph I was absorbed in the story, and with Nick West's character. Put on leave for being accused with pummeling his boss, Department of Homeland Security Special Agent West decides to make a surprise visit to Atlanta, and spend extra time with his beloved wife. On this spontaneous road trip he incurs a flat tire, which leads to the serendipitous meeting with a person whose family history, and connections, surrounds an unsolved 1940's crime.
First, West is simply intrigued, and decides to use his high-level friends, and his expertise in electronics and surveillance, to do a simple trace on a license plate that may link to the crime. Unfortunately, he is quickly sucked in to a whirling vortex where he, his wife, some of his DHS associates, and the sisters he is trying to assist, is thrown into the cross hairs of some very determined, sadistic killers. These killers have been hired by unsavory individuals searching for what may be multi millions of dollars. No one is going to get in their way.
Forced to partner with Simon Marks, a brilliant, talented, highly skilled, but amoral assassin, Special Agent Nick West must use everything he's learned from his expert bag of tricks before more innocent people are gruesomely tortured and murdered.
The ending is heart-pounding. Jim Burkett's novel is right up there with Lee Child, David Baldacci, and Vince Flynn. Don't miss this exciting read.
I DLd the book pre-additional editing and even though I found misused words, it certainly did not negatively distract from the story. I have certainly found worse editing from big authors and big publishers that have been much more annoying.
I totally look forward to more from this author. Burkett is certainly another diamond in amongst independent first time authors. What a great gift to all of us readers.
Jim Burkett's debut thriller is a rivetting, page-turner that grabs you from start to finish. Action, suspense, murder and dark humor. This novel has it all and wraps you up in a puzzle-turning thriller which keeps the reader on the edge of his/her seat.
Nick West uncovers a secret document from WWII that has the potential to devastate the United States. The resulting story is full of intrigue and government machinations with assassins, the FBI, CIA and Homeland Security all involved.
Burkett demonstrates an expert knowledge of computers and electronic surveillance which adds tremendous authenticity to this novel. It's an intelligent, suspenseful story that will stay with you long after you reach the final page.
I definitely will be reading the second Nick West, American Sanction (The Nick West Series). These are my kinds of books!
James A. Anderson, Author
This is a really good book about rotten eggs in the government, towards the end of WWII, and how a Dept of Homeland Security agent on leave, stumbles into a major case, and saves the day.
I enjoyed it a lot and look forward to reading more work by Jim Burkett. Well done!
