If you're weighing stuff to the nearest ounce or half-ounce this scale should do the trick. It's also a good size for easy storage.
When making coffee, you tare the scale after putting your vessel, grinds, etc on the scale. The problem with this scale is both buttons (unit and on/off/tare) ARE PART OF THE WEIGHABLE SURFACE. Who thought of that design? If I'm simply resting my finger on the tare button, the calculated weight jumps around like crazy. This also means you have to hold down the button to actaully turn it off. It's not tare, 0, tare, unit turns off - like another scale I have works.
One positive - the scale is slim and the display is big. That said, it doesn't matter as the functional design is a complete MISS.
And speaking of the battery, a little plastic prong that holds the battery in was broken off when I received it, so I had to put a piece of tape on the battery just to hold it down and test the scale for the first time.
I'm using it to weigh my birds, and so I've used it six times in the two days I've owned it as I was testing it out before and after feedings. I don't have anything to compare it to, so at least I assume it was accurate during it's very short lifespan.
I'm debating with myself whether it's worth buying a new battery to replace the dead one, since this type of batteries are pretty expensive and the battery holder was broken on arrival. I hate having to jury rig brand new things so I'll probably just toss it.
It was terrible. Things wrong with it:
- Battery died within 1.5 weeks
- It takes a watch battery. Not a normal AAA or AA
- The scale is very hard to set to 0 because when you push the button it recognizes your hand weight. Takes like 5-7 times of pushing the button to get a 0.
- Very flimsy design.
- Turns off very quickly / randomly during use. I've been measuring my coffee beans and had it turn off while I was pouring coffee beans?!?
Can't recommend not buying this enough.
I'm all for being entrepreneurial and starting your own business. So, I tend to not leave overly negative reviews. But this thing was just awful.
I can put on my cereal bowl, tare it and get zero. Then I add my 2 oz. of cheerios then tare it again to get it to zero. I then switch over to the milk setting and add my three fluid oz of milk and I am ready for breakfast. It is great for me as you can tell I am counting calories and on a diet. In the first week with the help of this little scale I have lost 6 pounds.
It measures down to the 1 tenth of an ounce.
The numbers and units of measure are nice and big and easy to ready. I have had another scale like this and the units of measure were hard to read. The numbers also stick out away from the actual scale so that you can see then from most plates and bowls.
To switch it from ounces to grams you have to press a switch on the bottom of the unit. I always am measuring in ounces so it is no problem for me.
Spills on the unit clean up easily with a little windex and paper towel.
The weighing circle is stainless steel. The upper part of the base looks like stainless steel with a plastic film on it for protection. This might be able to be removed. I am leaving it on as it looks good and you can only tell it is there by the softer feel.
The bottom of the base is a black plastic which looks good and does not seem cheap and like it would easily break in normal use.
January 2017: I have revised my review as my scale has begun malfunctioning. I only use it once a day to measure my dog's food. The scale will not take a consistent weight, so it is useless. Just this morning, I put the dish on it and weighed 19 grams. Then the number jumped down to 14. Then 18. Then 16. Settled on 14 again, but I clearly had more than 14 grams of food in the bowl. It looked like 19 or 20.
Anyway, I guess I'm going to have to buy a new scale in less than 9 months time. Don't waist your money.
