From the Back Cover
Maintaining his cover cost undercover cop Rick Gray the woman he loved. Sweet Ginny Bryson never really knew Rick. He never gave her the chance. Not then, and not now, when he's back with a new alias to gather evidence against Ginny's uncle. The man's crimes led to Rick's partner's death, and Rick wants justice to be served. But his investigation is stirring up trouble, and Ginny is smack-dab in the middle. Someone wants Ginny to pay the price for what her uncle has done. But how can Rick protect her without blowing his cover, jeopardizing his assignment...and risking both their lives?
Deep Cover is the first book in the series, Undercover Cops: Fighting for justice puts their lives--and hearts--on the line.

I felt as I read that the second half had a lot of repetition. Rick: "I love Ginny and wish she loved and trusted me and wouldn't out my identity. Once the cae is over I will tell her who I am. I need to get away so she is safe. No, I need to stay glued to her so she is safe." Ginny: "I am obsessed with Rick and he is trustworthy--surely--but just as surely not trustworthy. I am a pendulum swinging wildly from one extreme to the other and I am a basket case." The self-thoughts just seemed to churn the same thoughts over and over for a hundred pages. The story and I could have done without it.
Also, the resolution of the book felt awkward, rushed and--to me--phony or not in keeping with the story and the characters.
If I hadn't liked the first half (4 stars) so well, this book would undoubtedly be 2 stars (because I finished it) so averaging those two "scores" makes it 3 stars.
Also, Rick is not a very good undercover cop. He makes some rookie mistakes. I was shaking my head at the end, when his boss said that Rick is his best officer.
I did enjoy the suspense which is why I did not give up on the book. I had been excited to find a new Love Inspired Suspense series. This book was a disappointment. I did come to a better understanding of what it might be like being an undercover police officer, though. So many lies!
I am going back and forth about buying book 2 in the series. I will probably download it as I bought book 3 a while ago at a good price.
It has hard for me to read about Ginny sometimes as I found myself projecting my own daughters into that role with their sister Carly who is severely disabled. As my husband and I are feeling the ticking of life's clock, our hearts ache at thoughts of how Carly will be cared for when we are gone. But I think they ache even more at the idea that two of our daughters will, in some way, share a heavy burden for most or all of their lives. Yet even as I watched Ginny function as caregiving sister with joy, I knew that my daughters would also consider it a joy and privilege to be Carly's sister despite the burden it will often be.
It is the mark of great storytelling when we can readily place ourselves in the spot of fictional characters and have that experience move us, shape us, and enlighten us. Deep Cover helped me think through some things I don't ordinarily spend much time thinking about. More than that, it got me praying more about things that need to be taken to Jesus. I'm so thankful Sandra's book did that for me.
I hope you'll look her up and buy her book. Deep Cover has a lot of important things to say to people in a variety of life circumstances. And besides that, it just plain entertaining reading! And who doesn't need a great book to snuggle up with now and then? Deep Cover will be a book you'll want to take to the sofa next weekend and stuff into someone's stocking for Christmas.
Other than those points I thought the book was just "good".
