I have a suspicion that in the World's major cities, for sure, where we are so modernized, motorized, & locked into this cement & steel square world we have made for ourselves, you can almost be sure that no matter what, there will be some drugs going on within & without the younger generation, worldwide. We human tribes seem to be attracted to some drugs, even if it be only the legal ones, alcohol & tobacco.
There is also something to be said here for the notion of Crime for Money.
The operation focused upon in this book happens to be quite a Circus, however, as different Government Bureaus compete for influence. I am glad he got out of all this alive. If he had been someone more able to fit in & smile & say yes, sir, he would not have a book to write, or maybe he would have been killed.
This book helped to expose the hypocrisy of the War on Drugs in America while the very same agencies were working with these nations. As one of the D.E.A.'s top agents, if not the top agent, Levine had a unique insight to not only how our government worked within our borders but those of the countries we were working both with and against.
Things didn't help his case as intra-agency fighting and agendas kept him from properly being able to do his job and in many case shut down his work completely.
If you want an open on account on how the US used to work when it came to local countries and the drug issue that still persists today you'll want to pick up this first hand account that reads not only as a piece of non-fiction but one that reads like a fiction crime thriller. Some of what is shown in this book doesn't seem like it could be real in today's society and yet aspects surely still linger.
Terrifying and thrilling if not only from the quality of the writing but due to the non-fiction nature of the subject.
