Pros: Interesting world, creatures, and technology. The underwater world was a complete hit with the kid. This book is a little lighter on pictures than he generally prefers, but the story captured his imagination enough that he didn't mind. That makes it a good series to help him as he transitions away from the easier early chapter books.
Cons: I really wish that the author would have come up with a better reason for Max to steal the vehicle or handled it differently. Max acted like it would be embarrassing to be caught and he'd probably get in trouble, but he was using his Dad's work passcodes to steal and in the real world that would be the kind of thing his dad could be fired for! My kid new it was wrong and didn't like Max's character at the start because of it, enough that he wanted to quit reading. He was pretty happy to tell me later that Max turned out to be someone brave and willing to do the right thing.
