~*~ EXCERPT ~*~
Okay, there are certain things in this life a girl just shouldn’t have to deal with. Changing flat tires for instance. Radiators overheating, yes. A busted pipe. Programming the remote control. But being blindsided like that wasn’t fair at all. When the door closed between them, Maggie forced herself to breathe in a deep inhale. It did nothing at all to stop the swimming of her thoughts or the racing of her heart, but at that point anything was worth a try.
Showing up in the kitchen at breakfast for no reason was one thing. Showing up when she was in her oldest pajamas with the rip on one side was quite another. Her hand went up to her hair, and she raked her fingers through it extra hard. There was no telling how she looked, but how he looked? Wow, was he easy on the eyes. Not to even mention how heart-stoppingly handsome he was minus the hat and the bandana. Dark hair, cropped extra short, and that face, and that smile. Ugh. It just wasn’t fair.
She rolled her eyes so she was looking up at the ceiling in desperation. “God, listen to me. I do not need to fall for this guy. I don’t need him to keep showing up like this. Please. Please. I’m asking You…”

Since I was looking for a clean, fast, easy read, this book surprised me in that it wasn't so easy to get through. It made me wonder where the author was going and when the characters would wake up. In some places, I kept thinking, "How long are y'all gonna drag your feet? When are you gonna wake up and grow up?" But if I'm honest, everything that happened needed to happen the way it did.
Technical stuff...no misspellings that I noticed...some formatting issues in switching POVs that kinda threw me, but not too often...
This story continues in a series, but I'm satisfied with the closure in book 1. So in my opinion, this book stands on its own pretty well. But, if you like to see how characters' lives continue after the HEA, the author has provided their continuing adventure.
If you're looking for a story with more depth, one that contains strong Christian themes and characters who are struggling to overcome serious obstacles, this might just be the book for you.
Maggie is a doll. Even though she has absolutely nothing, and realizes she doesn’t fit into this world of money and power, she does her absolute best. All the while, she’s asking God for guidance and help.
Keith is a walking contradiction. All he wants is to work with his father’s racehorses, but he also has to be the son of a billionaire. He puts aside what he wants more than anything in an attempt to make his father proud of him.
I could go on for ages about how wonderful this book was and never do it justice. Staci Stallings has an amazing gift. Every person she introduces the reader to is brought to life. With a few words, the reader is transported to walks through tree-shaded lanes, horseback riding, to sitting beside a waterfall. The reader feels each emotion Maggie and Keith go through. When introduced to Dallas, Keith’s fiancé, the reader knows right away she’s had a privileged upbringing and fully expects it to continue without Staci Stallings saying anything about it. She has definitely perfected the axiom “Show, don’t tell.”
As I mentioned above, there are a few sermons in the book. Maggie goes to church with her two young charges, and instead of glossing over the time, Staci Stallings uses that time to impart a few excellent messages. Each one reached out and grabbed me. I can’t help but believe the three sermons she includes in this book can be applied to anyone.
For anyone who likes Christian romance, I’d fling this book at them in a heartbeat. As such, I’m looking forward to reading more books by Staci Stallings in the future. I’m positive they will be just as well-written and engaging as this book was.

The one flaw is in the editing and the typography. There is a lot of missing punctuation, mostly commas. I reported a few of them, but there are a lot. And a large handful of clunky sentences that should have been rewritten. But the story behind them is good.

However, if you read the book more from the stand point of an account of the hero's growth as a human being and of his developing spirituality there are a lot of worthy messages in this tale and Keith comes across (mostly) as a real person, despite the occasional over the top drama going on around him.
In fact, although the heroine Maggie is the first character introduced in the book, I really feel this story is Keith's, not hers.
The main crux of the story centres on the fact Keith has allowed his domineering father to dictate his choices in life, even his choice of future wife. He has a dormant faith that springs to life shortly after he meets the heroine. He begins to question his drinking and partying and starts to feel anxious about marrying the deeply materialistic and (as he gradually realises over time) very manipulative Dallas.
The feelings between Maggie and Keith are clearly strong, but Keith's fiance is in love with an idea, the idea of being envied for her life style and marriage to a rich handsome man, a man that doesn't have to be Keith, he's simply a means to an end. So the readers sympathies are very much with the H&h, not the shrewd and shrewish Dallas.
I will try and avoid plot spoilers as I explain the elements of the tale that I found less credible.
I find the tragic coincidence that links the H&h a bit hard to swallow, rich people have their staff under go deep dive background checks. Someone like Maggie might have had a dangerous grudge against Keith's dad. I think it likely in reality that she would have never got the job.
Other elements of the tale that don't feel believable are the staff's often rude, dismissive attitude to Keith. Ike can maybe get away with this because of his position, but the Step Mother's secretary even thinking she can do so rings false and his father's strange treatment of him just comes across as incredibly inconsistent and weird.
Maggie's almost romance she drifts into with Greg doesn't ring true, surely such a religious girl wouldn't even entertain the idea of dating someone whose religious convictions are unknown to her? And if Maggie is so religious, why is church going something Keith has to push her into doing?
The next comment is a spoiler, I found the jilted at the altar scene annoying, in the real world it happens, but as insensitive as Dallas was I felt Keith (a warm hearted young man) would have been kinder to them both and ended things earlier. I think the author made Keith look cruel, for the sake of a dramatic scene.
Maggie starts off real, but gradually becomes less so, along with the inconsistencies I noted above, she lets Ike attack her character without even a feeble attempt at defending it! Sorry, but a girl whose survived the foster system mind and faith intact would have more backbone than that!
Its a clean read, although pre marital sex between Dallas and the increasingly reluctant Keith is clearly going on despite his developing faith.
