- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2014This book is excellent reading for Jewish history for those who only think of the "east coast" Jewish history. My great-great grandmother and her in laws, who were my uncles (she married the brother of a dead husband) settled in Texas. I found one of the uncles mentioned in the book and there was a picture of him as well. I never knew about these people, so this book opened a window for me into my own personal history, as well as the life of people who thrived in Texas in tough times. I may never know about the people "left behind" in Europe and their fates, but at least I know more of the American story of my family and for that I am grateful to the authors and contributors of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2017Priceless for those interested in the subject matter and who lived through a span of 60-80 years and this have some "look back" perspective and frame of reference. This is a valuable resource for understanding how in a period of roughly 100 years, generational change, economic change, transportation changes from passenger rail to automobiles and the Interstate Hiigway system, wrought great changes to the way of life of the children and grandchildren of the itenersnt peddlers, of mostly Eastern European and German origin, who first arrived in Texas before the civil war.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 6, 2018Provided an excellent starting place for a research project I was assigned. It has many primary sources incorporated and offers much more than just photographs. Further it cites everything it contains giving you many more sources to investigate and to learn from. This book is wholly unique and we'll worth the purchase even for a casual reader. It is written academically, but it is not so complex as to be non-accessible to the common reader.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2014great book! my family is one of the families mentioned in this book.
