The characters were well-rounded and fun to get to know. The Griffin is sweet in her overbearing way. Nan is everything a grandmother could be, from baking to swift kicks in the rear when needed. Duhywynt irritated me most but he's young and I'm willing to give him time to mature. Myfawny, also young, gives Olly both necessary perspective and snark in equal amounts. It'll be interesting to see how they both grow into themselves. Myrhydion took a little bit to grow on me but once you understand his sense of humor, you can see his personality. I enjoyed his growth throughout the story and would love to know more about his time while Olly was away. Olly's discovery, or re-discovery, of his feelings (for everyone, not just Myrhydion) as he remembers more of his childhood is really lovely to see.
I'm glad that this book has no cliffhangers as I see so often in these "free" books available on Amazon. I especially am grateful to find a book that is well-written and unique, with solid characters and dialogue. Unfortunately, this is a rarity. The only major thing I would say is the book is missing one final scene. Don't misunderstand me, the book has a good solid ending. There's just one more thing I wanted to see. For those who have read the book, they know what I mean but I won't include spoilers here. I hold out hope that it might be in another book.
After I finished the book, I immediately went back to re-read it. I love a book that gives more the second (or seventieth) time around. In summary, this is a satisfying read from a new (to me) author. Though the book stands alone, I just purchased the other two books in the series and expect to enjoy them just as much. I hope you give it a chance.
I adored this story! There's trouble/danger, mythology, quite a few mysteries, angst, prickly, witty, and sarcastic characters, attempts to manage both friend and romantic relationships, and a heart-wrenching reveal.
The characters all had their individual personalities, from the quirky and creative Olly, proper and dry-witted Myrhydion and then there was "Dewi" who is properly annoying, but hilarious at the same time (you can't help but laugh at his indignation and his clothing selection). There are quite a few "side" characters that may seem overwhelming at first but they each appear consistently in their role that it doesn't take long to remember who each of them are, and they really add to the overall feel of the puzzle that is the Llyn.
The format took a bit of getting used to as Olly's memories, dreams, and short flashbacks are interspersed with the current timeline, but they're all relevant and help you get an idea of where the story is going and what you need to know without ruining the plot twists, and you know why that format was so relevant when you finish the book-- so it's worth pushing through the first bits of slight confusion if you're not found of flashbacks!
I'd recommend this if you like a mysterious storyline and slow-burns.
