Story
The apocalypse came by our own making, with a single blinding flash, followed by a firestorm of sheer flame. It took just an hour and a half to wipe out 3.5 billion people and 10,000 years of civilization, plunging humanity into a hopeless Dark Age. In the aftermath, survivors in Moscow moved underground and slowly organized into small socially and politically independent tribes, clustered around the city's deep, subway stations. The young man, Artyom is among them. A member of the first generation of children raised in the subterranean world following the apocalypse, he has only the vaguest recollections of life above ground, and contact with other humans beyond those that inhabit his local station, "Exhibition," but he will have to face new experiences with both if humanity is to survive. Mutated beasts known as "Dark Ones" are spreading throughout the isolated stations of the Metro, and Artyom has been chosen as the messenger to spread the news of the new peril.

Become humanity’s last savior and uncover the truth behind the horrors that await in Moscow’s underground.
Metro 2033 is a single player, FPS that also incorporates RPG elements. Action played out in the role of young Artyom, is mission-based and because the game is based on the Glukhovsky novel, the storyline veers away from the anti-Russian stance that is often seen in post-apocalyptic stories and video games. Here the Russian characters are humanity, and fight every day against the terrors that nuclear war has wrought. These terrors come mostly in the form of mutants known as "Homo Novus," who have invaded the Underground, as well as frightening alien-like paranormal creatures that haunt the gameworld. The game hero, Artyom, has a certain immunity to the latter and a talent for dispatching the former, which together make him a very popular choice to be sent on missions. Combat throughout utilizes a mixture of improvised firearms and melee weapons. Balancing the use of these two is important because in this world of violence and scarcity, ammunition plays the duel role of protection and commodity. Throughout the game players will use ammo as much to purchase items and upgrades at different stations visited, as they will use it in combat. In addition, the choices made by players throughout the game register as "Enlightenment Points," or the lack of them. Accumulated totals of these register as a variety of constructs such as curiosity, kindness and prejudice resistance that can and will lead to alternative story endings. Together with its unique inventory management system, engrossing storyline and replay value based on morality, Metro 2033 is sure to be a game not to be missed by FPS and RPG players alike.

Top reviews from the United States

I got this game primarily to see if the computer I built could run it. According to many GPU bench marking websites, Metro 2033 is one of the most difficult games to run on full spec. I was happy to see I could easily run it fully maxed out with no less than 60fps. As for the game itself, I enjoyed it more than i thought I would. It was very unique to any of the other first person shooters that I have played and trust me, I have played a lot. I would like to keep this review as spoiler free as possible however, I did like how the makers of the game made it seem more realistic in the fact that money was no longer the currency, the weapons were appropriate given the situation of the game, you have to scavenge around, and the way you have to pump charge your battery from time to time to run your electronic equipment. In a world of nuclear fallout, these little details and more iv'e not mentioned, make the game more believable. Its a game with many cut scenes, and fairly short levels but that shouldn't be a problem for those who enjoy the story side of video games. It also keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's similar to doom 3 in the fact that its creepy. Slipping through dark tunnels and seeing a shadow or hearing an abrupt deep growl or scream behind you is unnerving especially if you have a loud sound system like I do... it will freak you out. The creatures you come across are also unique to other games which was a big plus for me. I'm not sure this is a game you would play through more than one or two times but for less than $20.00, why not just play it? I was thoroughly satisfied with the game and highly suggest playing it. I would also suggest that you make sure your computer can handle it too.

Let me start off by saying that I am a fan of the post-apocalyptic genre. I bought this game originally for my Xbox 360 and found it to be a very good yet buggy game. I saw that Metro was on sale so I purchased it for my gaming laptop, mainly to see how high I could get the graphics up.

Steam- I read a lot about the complaints about it being a Steam game. Being a Steam user, I was glad to know that the CD key provided when purchasing this game would work if you were to try to activate it on Steam. In other words, if you had the disc and you used the CD key provided, you can enter that into Steam and it will count as you owning it on Steam. You never have to use the disc again, Steam updates Metro 2033 when an update is available, and Steam keeps track of game achievements and time played.

Graphics- The graphics in this game are quite good! I turned the graphics to its highest possible settings for my laptop and the game ran smoothly and looked fantastic. Most of the time you are running through a dark metro tunnel that doesn't give the graphics the justice it deserves. Once you are on the surface of Moscow, the graphics look really good. I would compare the graphics to Skyrim or even Crysis 2. The one drawback about the graphics is the fact that human faces look somewhat blocky.Faces don't seem to be that well done but everything else does.

Gameplay- Metro 2033 runs like most first person shooter games. The controls are easy to get used to but the game itself seems to be somewhat buggy. Once when I played, I walked up a slope to get to a building, I fell through the slope and fell infinitely down under the city. This was not supposed to happen. I had to go back to the most recent checkpoint but that wasn't that bad. NPCs in the game tend to be a little "stupid" if you will. Enemies will run from one door to the next, backtrack, and repeat. Sometimes an enemy might not take notice that it is being shot at. There is stealth in the game, which seems to be a big part of some of the levels. I like the way that stealth works, however, being sneaky isn't that easy. Once one enemy knows where you are, all of them know. It doesn't matter if the other enemy is a couple hundred feet away and on another floor, he will just know.

Story- I found the story of Metro 2033 quite interesting and engaging. Most of the game is just shoot this and shoot that but that is what all games really are. Towards the end of the game, the game becomes a more story driven and you question your motives in the game and wonder about some of the mysterious things you encounter throughout it. I won't spoil anything but there is a cool but difficult to get to ending of the game. Unfortunately, if you do not read about the requirements for the ending and do not do everything exactly how you are supposed to, you may never even know that such an ending was possible. I am currently reading the Metro 2033 book and it is similar to the game. The game is more action packed while the book is more story. That all makes sense. If you are interested in the book, I recommend playing the game first then reading the book. You will understand the story better.

Difficulty- Metro 2033 has a couple different difficulties but the easiest difficulty can prove to be pretty challenging. It is easy to be overwhelmed by mutants, killed while trying to fight humans, get caught in a trap that wasn't easily spotted, or die from loss of oxygen loss. While fighting on the surface world, you need to wear a gas mask. You must change oxygen filters frequently and if you don't, you breath heavily, your mask becomes filled with condensation, making it hard to see, and you eventually die. If you take enough damage to the face, cracks and holes appear in your mask, making it easier to lose oxygen and eventually die.

Pros:
Good Story
Amazing Graphics
Fun and Challenging Gameplay
Realistic

Cons:
Glitchy and Buggy
Sometimes A Little Too Challenging
Faces Look Bad

Bottom Line- Metro 2033 is a fun but very challenging game that could have used a little more work. Though the graphics are spectacular, faces look like garbage. Gameplay is solid but too many glitches appear to make it flow perfectly. The story is quite interesting and the gameplay is pretty realistic. I would definitely recommend buying this game, especially if it is on sale like it is now.

I bought the game on the most recent spring sale for 5 bucks. Thought the game looked decent so I decided to give it a try, what the hell right?
Well If you're a gamer that doesn't pay much attention to detail, or doesn't play often then you might find this game to be amusing.
Unfortunately for me the game had several nagging characteristics that would constantly piss me off. One was the fact that you could stand within plain
sight of an enemy and he wouldn't see you, and other times when you're completely hidden they would find and/or hear you. By that time you're screwed
because you have no ammo as it is. Another thing is the throwing knives. You can pick them up, but you spend a ridiculous amount of time trying to find
them in the dark, and if the enemy falls on the knife when it's in him, then you can't get it back sometimes. Another thing is that the weapons are rarely
explained, and if you swap your weapon with one on the ground just to try it, yours will completely disappear sometimes and you are stuck with a weapon you didn't want.
The gas masks piss you off because Artyom's breathing is much too loud, and you can't see jack out of the lens of the mask.
Yet I gave it a 3/5 b/c it had potential to be fun, and as long as you can get through the nagging characteristics it's still a decent game.
