Deep South Native Plants for the Home Garden:
A Journey to Discover a Selection of Winners
Perhaps...
- you love gardening and you’re ready to do something positive for Mother Earth.
- you’ve been hearing a lot about native plants, but those huge reference books are a little daunting.
- you'd love a beautiful backyard that’s full of the activity of butterflies, bees, and birds.
- you're anewcomer to the South, and you’d like a few suggestions about plants that will most likely succeed in your landscape.
- Or…perhaps you valuegardening with a minimum of labor and expense.
If any or all of the above statements resonate with you, this bookis aimed in your direction. In these pages, the author serves as a tour guide on an imaginary bus trip through South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The goal of the journey is to identify a small selection of the thousands of perennial plants that are most at home in the Deep South.
This isn’t a comprehensive reference book though it does contain quite a bit of information. Deep South Native Plants for the Home Garden is written in a breezy, slightly playful style, with plant information and 35 color photos sprinkled with informal anecdotes. It’s light reading but it carries the weight of an important message. It’s more of a mini-guide to an A-List, a few fabulous native plant winners that can be planted at home by a beginning gardener, by a master gardener, or by anyone who cares about Mother Earth. By YOU, hopefully!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2024Observing all the wildflowers made me smile every turn of the page. I learned so much and loved the whole experience! I couldn't put it down to do proper research the first read, so a second read is in the works to research on my noted selection of winners.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2024Refreshing, specific and authoritative. Like having a conversation with a knowledgeable friend, Jane Jabbour's book contains just enough information to make you want to gather your garden gloves and shovel and fill your yard with plants that help Mother Earth & her creatures. Learn to easily identify and choose what grows well in the deep South thanks to the book's abundant photos. Make your yard beautiful and make a difference.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2024Playful and clever exposure to native plants of the south. Plenty of pictures and ideas to make you want to plant your yard (and maybe your neighbors!) with only native plants. Just enough information on natural habitat and geographic location. along with some history. Then where in your garden, under what conditions and care it will be most "at home". Written with obvious joy of an avid natural plant gardener.
This will be my go-to source for my future landscape plantings.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2024I have collected hundreds of garden books over the years, but this one is unlike any other. Ms Jabbour has taken the subject of native plants and given it a new spin - literally. Her imaginary bus tour is charming, informative and fun, and not the least bit "preachy," a shortcoming of many native plant authors. Join the group and find her favorite plants in their native environments and discover why they may be perfect for your own garden no matter where you live.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2024In a world of diminishing habitat, it’s refreshing to find a book that offers the reader an accessible and sure-fire way to make a difference in our own backyards. Jane Jabbour’s delightful “journey” through the Deep South helps us find, maintain and understand how each native plant supports wildlife in our own environment.
