Deep as a Tomb Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 6

Sixteen-year-old Myla feels the land in her blood and bones. Royal heir Beran wants revenge for murder. Forest native Kaven wants to protect Myla from every danger.

Like her people, the Westreachers, Myla's tied to the green world through tombs the forest made when it made the people. So when she finds she can open tombs long thought sealed, she's thrilled – until her father demands she use her power to help him rebel against the king. Myla would rather mix herbal remedies and spend time with Kaven, whose family is hip deep in debt and secrets.

Prince Beran is sent to impress the people of Westreach so the council will confirm him as King's Heir. He's to use his power to forward the king's goals, but on his first day, an anonymous forester murdered the guard he loved like a father. Stone royal duty, because Beran wants revenge… he’s willing to make enemies everywhere to find the killer.

Thrown together as fosterlings in the same household, Myla, Beran, and Kaven must each decide how far they're willing to use personal and political power to get what they want.

Dorothy Winsors latest book is a fun & engaging read. All three main characters are complex and developed but I have a particular fondness for Myla. As the mother of two daughters I relish female characters who have layers, especially in the fantasy genre. Too often the girls are perfect saviors of everything or they are too dumb to save themselves. Myla is smart and talented, but she's also vulnerable to mistakes based on misplaced loyalty and misguided intentions. I think any girl reading this will see parts of herself in Mayla.

This isn't a 'girly' book though. There may be a romance but it's set against a background of intrigue with the young heroes struggling to find their own way in the world. Protective Kaven has the world on his shoulders as he worries about Myla, his mother and his ill intentioned uncle. Prince Beran is torn between duty to his father and his overwhelming need to avenge the murder of the bodyguard he loved as a father.

There is sword play, mystery, thieves, secret organizations and even a little romance. Pretty much something for everyone.

Winsor creates a unique setting, where tombs grow from the earth, the Forest provides for its people, and the spirit of that Forest wanders as a tangible force. Even in this original setting, however, the struggle of these young characters to remain true to themselves while also fulfilling their duties and doing what's best for those they love is something with which all can relate.

This is the fourth book I've read in this series and my favorite so far. I readily identified with the female protagonist, and I love the world the author has created. If you're looking for unusual adventures and believable young characters, you can't go wrong with Winsor.

I loved the hero's passions for working to save traditional healing arts and for daring to stand up to her father who planned a politically expedient marriage in favor of a love bond based on friendship and shared experience. Some of the political divisions parallel those now being played out in real time; maybe the changes Myla may help bring about give us hope for resolving our current tensions.

Enchanting! Dorothy Winsor has created a world filled with memorable, spirited characters who are fiercely loyal to their families and roots even as they expand their horizons and forge new alliances with outlanders. I couldn't put it down!
